Yellowstone Photos

Post by millster »

In the tradition of sharing photos...My parents and I took a daytrip to Yellowstone National Park on Saturday (no, the Vibe didn't go). I hadn't been since I was in the 6th grade and things have been pretty rough lately, so I took the opportunity when it was offered. It's more beatiful than I remembered. More work too though. Some of the areas we went to require quite a hike. It's well worth it though, trust me. It's sad to see how much of the park has burned over the years however. The trees are growing back, but they'll probably still be small trees for several more years. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is stunning. The photos hardly do it justice. It's funny to see the Yellowstone River up at it's headwaters too. It's the same river that runs through Billings, but in the park it's still clean and clear. By Billings it's picked up quite a bit of mud. As for the vehicle report, there was one rental Matrix (lucky folks) and a Monotone-Shadow Vibe. I didn't get a real good look at the plates on the Vibe, but they looked to be Canadian... possibly. If any of our members were in YNP this weekend, sharp Vibe! You got it dude! It's a 4 day drive, so I'm gonna have to plan well in advance... Prolly will need 2-3 weeks off work. If I'm driving that much, no way in hell am I jus gonna come out for the one thing...I'm gonna make stops on the way...see all the sights...

I know that drive well... Actually, I only drove it from Ohio, so you have a little more still. You better believe you have to stop to see the sights along the way. There's a lot between here and NJ. That would be an incredible trip to make. Hope it works out for you!

quote:Isn't there a hat that fell off or something on that order that is calcifying over from the minerals in the water and they have not removed to it to see how long it will take? Not sure there. I'd say it's entirely possible though. I know that while taking those photos of the falls I had a deathgrip on my camera.

One thing I forgot to mention:Those of you who have read about Yellowstone will know that it's constantly changing. New steam vents appear where there were none, etc. The weirdest part I've seen is what I saw this weekend. The whole back half of Norris Basin is closed due to changing thermal patterns. The ground temperature has exceeded a safe level and the geyser activity has increased to the point of being unsafe. The photos of steamboat geyser are a first for me. In the past when I've been there, you get little more than steam or a little spurt of water now and again. One of those photos has the geyser in a rather impressive eruption of about 15 feet. It would erupt like that about every minute. These little eruptions were cool, but it is capable of 300+ feet. That I would like to see, but I'll settle for having had the chance to see it erupt at all. Here's some more fun for anyone interested. Of particular interest, the Nature Tours and panoramic photos and webcams. In the Nature tours, select the area and then click on Interactive Map to see all of the notable features.http://www.nps.gov/yell/tours/index.htm
