i have a 04 awd vibe with about 40000 miles. my dad has the same car with 100,000 plus. this is his second one. he gets ruffly 34-36mpg. i am only getting 26ish. is there any thing that i can check or change to increase my mpg. i have installed a k&n airfilter. i was thinking the cat might be getting pluged up. i have smelled sulfer a few time over the past month while the car was running. i have been told that it is a sign that the cat is going bad. any advice?
The AWD can get consistantly 34-36 on the HWY.IF you keep it under 70 MPH like around 60-65mph. and if you dont use the A/C. And you have at least 36 PSI of pressure in your tires.Mine has and does. You may need to investigate the cat issue. When mine was replaced b/c of the TSB issue. I averaged about 2mpg better.
I wouldn't worry about the sulfur smell. The Vibes have always done that. It is just the type of gas you are putting in it. Mine has smelled like that on occasion ever since I bought it. The difference could just be between how you and your father drive, if you do more city driving or are hard on the accelerator off of the stop line or let it idle for a longer period of time it could account for the mileage discrepancy. Could also be the type of fuel. If you use ethanol and he doesn't you will lose a few MPG right there.Hope that helps.
