8.5" LCD screen/dvd mounted above glovebox in dash

Post by sstress »

In Dash DVD: I made some space above my glovebox for an 8.5" LCD screen. DVD player is in the glove box. It was easy to make the hole with a dremel tool, but the creation of a fiberglass insert took some time. It started with some stretch material painted with resin. For strength I added a few more layers of fiberglass. After shaping and sanding it required a touch of bondo to fill and smooth. Final mold was sprayed with primer, sanded between layers until smooth and then sprayed with satin black followed by 3 layers of clear coat.Sound is pumped thru the stereo system via aux input connections on the back of the Kenwood headunit. It literally sounds like a movie theater. NOTE: Pics are shot with my cell phone. Not the best quality.

Looks awesome! Do you plan to power the DVD behind the dash and add a power switch?

Thanks guys! Once I cut the hole in the dash, there was no turning back Next steps? I am going to mount the DVD player on roller slides inside and above the glovebox. It'll roll out when you need it, and be tucked out of the way when you don't.Oh, and yes, the power will be wired behind the dash too. I dont want any wires showing.I'll post more pics when that's done!My best!

I am very impressed; that's quite a fabjob you did there and the install looks clean throughout.I just gotta wonder out loud...will this affect or interfere with the passenger side air bag if deployed?

Airbag concern: I was very concerned about and aware of the airbag position and intentionally mounted the screen as low and as flush to the dash as possible. It had to be inside the dash and not sticking up, which was a difficult task with an 8.5" screen. My nephew mounted a flat screen on top of his dashboard in front of his airbag... I told him he could kill someone sitting in the passenger seat if the airbag launched. So yes, it was a primary concern for me when I began the project.

good to see you were concerned about the air bag, sometimes these things go un-noticed. Hopefully you will never have to use the airbag.Looks very nice!

I was thinking some tint would help a little bit. But even so, when I park it in public territory, I thow a towel or shirt (or whatever is in the car) over it to keep it hidden. It does sit it up high, and it will grab someones attention. Thanks for the kind words guys!

I'd put a sticker on the side of the car that says "Not responsible for what happens to you if you break into my car" Then I would rig up a "electric fence" around the car and have it hooked up to my Flux Capicator. They would have 1.21 gigawatts of electricity run thru them. That otta do it. woh, sorry coffee rush. sstress: "I thow a towel or shirt (or whatever is in the car) over it to keep it hidden." that sounds like a pretty good idea. That should work well for you, most of the time theives are looking for the obvious, and don't take chances if they don't think there's anything.
