Oil Change at Toyota Rip Off:

So I went to Toyota to get an oil change. I figured, you know, the same engine as the Matrix and they would know more than a corner gas station. Also, they are just around the corner and my dealer is far away by shuttle bus. I've always done my own oil since I began driving but my employer is paying so what the heck.Oil Chage 29.95 CDN (pls tax), however, they charged $12.75 (CDN) for GM Filter! Total cost $45 after taxes and disposal fee. Now, I've not had a chance to stick my head under the hood (see reason below) to see if it is a GM brand but the shop guy said before the change they were the same. What's a GM dealer's price for an oil change?Then, I get a ticket driving back to the office . I can't seem to drive 50 KM/h (30 M/h). I was clock at 70 KM/h (45 M/h). I tried, really I tried but I'm at 3000 RPM at 55 in 2nd then 65 in 3rd. He dropped it so no points but a $55 fine. Sucks to be me but at least my oil changes are free!A

$25 US here. I don't know much Canadian that would be, but yeah. That sucks that you got a ticket man. I know the feeling. But yeah, at least you didn't get any points, that's always a good thing. The Pontiac dealership next to my house uses Valveline(sp?). So, I don't know. I've only gotten my oil changed once at the dealer. That's it.Inder

I pay a little over $30 (I think) when I get it changed at Turpin (where I got my Vibe).

i get mine done for about 23$cdn at costco.they use castrol gtx......so far so good....dealers over charge for crappy bulk oil.

costs me about $11 US for oil and a filter. Too bad you can't change the oil yourself and hit the company up for the oil change using Toyota dealership prices.Sounds like a good deal, no way could I get my employer to pay for my car's maintenance. How did you get that nice arrangement?

They didn't put a Toyota filter on it? Sheesh! No doubt that sort of thing would happen here if I took my Vibe down to the Toyota place. Those guys there are too arrogant to realize that this car as TOYOTA mechanicals... Needless to say, I refuse to take my car there. I get my oil changed at the dealer... I bring in my own oil and walk out with a $12.95 bill.

I checked today and yep, it's a blue Delco. So they ordered in the GM filter for a toyota engine -- go figure? Well, I'm never going back there again which is too bad because they are really close to my work. I guess it's going to back to shuttle bus time...A\

Sometimes it's worth the hassle... I've got a Pontiac dealer 5 miles from my house, but I go 20 miles in the opposite driection to get better service... To me, it's not the most convenient thing, but is worth it due to the quality of service I get from them.

actually the oil filters through GM are more expensive then toyota...should have used that one.

depending on where you go... when the Vibe first came out, along with the 2003 sunfire and grand am models, those oil filters were expensive and a $29.95 lof was around $40... but at least here at the dealership I work at, Parts has adjusted the price down so that the filters are the same price as the rest and the LOF is still $29.95 plus tax. I wouldn't say Toyota ripped you off cause I bet their customers are charged the same.

Always used, still do, AC Delco Filters for my Vibe since new in 03, $6.00-$7.00 at the local auto store. Nothing special about them...

I'm not a parts person so no idea at all. Now the Sunfire, Cavalier, Grand Am one I could understand since its a shell-less filter. But the GM ones we use here for the Vibe say Toyota right on the side.

I'll bet you have or can get the AC filter though. I am not sure the number off the top of my head but I do have it at home. Those filter only types used to be on the 2.5L "Iron Duke" engine, my sister had one in her 1991 Grand AM. The damn hex cap to get access to the filter off used to like to strip!

Oh I am sure others then Toyota make this filter since that engine has been around for a while now. I bet FRAM makes them to. Probably even Pennzoil and QState for those quick lube places.hated those old grandams and other cars with those, the cap would strip and were messy to change.

You might call this a lesson in Anger Management. I quit doing my own oil changes when I bought a new '88 Ford Escort GT.The FIRST time I changed the oil, I discovered that I had to jack up the front of car to squeeze underneath, even without a creeper, (no drive-on ramps at my house). Then the filter was on the back-side of the engine up above the exhaust downpipe, the steering rack, and a crossmember, as I recall.I decided I was old enough and smart enough to let someone else burn themselves on the hot exhaust, let hot oil drip in their face, and skin their knuckles trying to reach and unscrew the G****** filter.I pay $21.99 US at a quicklube place for 1.0 miles from my house for Pennzoil.

The issue is with lowered Vibes which we both have, and me losing access to a hoist... its to tight to crawl under there even without a creeper to change the oil. My situation is different: the Vibe is covered by my employer so my oil changes are paid; hence why the $15 Delco filter didn't bother me. Luckily, my other car is a 1987 Bronco II so no lift, jack stands, just slide underneath. I can change its oil in under 10 minutes, but it sucks as a commuter car (more than a tank of gas a week!). I prefer to change my own because you can see what's going on and size up and future problems but with six free changes a year, I'll let someone else do the Vibe. From now on I'm going back to the dealer and the shuttle bus.A\

Rhino Ramps work great got them for my Vette, it is low to the ground and use them for all my cars now. The ramps are Composite thus are very easy to move around and made for low profile vehicles.

They cost $30-$40 dollars and I got mine at a Pep Boys on sale, not sure if you have those near you. I have also seen them at Murrays Auto Parts.My PT also hit the conventional metal ramps.

yeah I was thinking of those steel conventional ones, but if there are longer not so steep ramps those would work. I don't have a Pep boys near me.

Dad has a set of the metal ramps... Every car I've owned would end up with the bumper scraping when trying to drive up on the ramps, they are pretty steep. Our solution was pretty simple: Sit the ramps on the floor, and lift up the angled part you drive up on (whatever you call that) and stick a couple of long boards under there. Works like a charm.

My GM Dealer sold me a ten oil/filter change card for $119.99; so that's 12.00 bucks for an oil change and filter at the dealer. Just don't lose the card! Last time I had a free tire rotation coupon from the Pontiac magazine too!
