For all those having problems w/ Conti's....***READ***

Post by maddmic »

I got great news yesterday. If you have the Continental Conti Touring tires on your Vibe, there could be a solution. As stated in another post, I only got about 11k on my Conti's before I hit the treadwear marks. I took the car into the dealership yesterday after contacting Continental. Continental advised me that I had to take it into the shop and have them verify that there was nothing wrong with the car. If the Vibe looked fine, then they would look into replacing my tires because they should last longer than 11k miles. I took my Vibe into the local Pontiac dealership (where I bought it), and they said that they would run the inspection. I got a call later in the day stating that the car looked fine, but that they had some REALLY good news. They told me that there is a known problem with the Conti's on some Vibes and that GM has agreed to replace them due to premature wear. He further went on to say that I was getting 4 brand new Goodyear GS-A's and a 4 wheel alignment at NO COST TO ME. I picked up the Vibe about 2 hours ago and I have 4 brand new GY's on it. Needless to say, I am impressed with my dealership and will continue to work with them in the future. For those of you who still have the Conti's with fast treadware, you might want to check out your dealership and see if you can't get the same deal that I did.

Well that's a nice thing for GM to do. I haven't heard anything from Toyota yet about the issue though. My stock rims are sitting at my place with halfway worn, 2500mi Conti's on them. I'd still like to get them replaced though to increase the rims' resale value.Do you know exactly what the dealer "inspected"? I'm sure that once they see a lowered car, they'll void the replacement offer.

Ooh! I should try and do this! Too bad I had to scrap 2 of the Conti's last year when I had the snow tires put on. Maybe I could find 2 used ones somewhere on a discount rack and throw them on the car and try to get some free GoodYear's! Thanks for the heads up!

I will have to check on the service bulletin. The service dept is closed for today. But keep in mind, this isn't just because you don't like the tires. It's only if there's abnormally fast wear on them. Also, just a bit of info on them. When I talked to Continental, she advised me that these tires don't have a warranty on them because they tend to wear out between 17k and 24k miles. So if you're like me and you only got 11k or so, then that's my idea of fast wear.

I'm not sure a about any new policy from GM ? My Vibe has 14,000 miles and all four tires are worn out but when I took it to the local GM/Pontiac dealership in Victoria, B.C. they refused to help .The Service Manager said that since all four tires were equally worn, there was nothing defective with the tires or the car and it is the result of my driving. I provided copies of the threads posted here and he refused to pursue the matter; he was not even prepared to call GM to ask !I tracked down the GM 1-800 number in Canada and am trying to deal directly with them but so far no luck. They say that they will escalate the issue and that they will give me a call next week to let me know what they've decided. Anyway, they didn't acknowledge that this was a common problem and don't seem to have an established policy; perhaps there is a difference between GM USA and GM Canada ?Just thought I'd pass the info along.

I had my two front tires replaced by GM Canada but it took a lot of phone calls and persistence. Mine had 6,000 Km and were over half gone.

Well, it took awhile but I got GM to replace all four tires. The tires were at 1/32 with 14,000 miles. They are going to install new Goodyear tires. Sometimes persistence does pay off.

I SO wish they were doing this when my first Vibe needed new tires back in '03.

I told the shop I bought my rims/tires from that they could keep the factory wheels/tires. Never had them beyond the first 10,000 or so miles.

Great News, I had many problems with the Conti Tires on my Vibe. Finally took them in (after buying new tires) to my dealer with all my receipts for rotations done every 5k miles or so.The dealer showed them to the GM rep...who authorized a payment of over $400 to cover the cost of my new tires !!!Wow, this is the kind of service I expect !Good luck to all with Contis...These were s**t. The car sounds and handles much better with the new tires.
