AEM pulleys?

Post by engine1 »

The underdrive kit only comes with an alternator pulley! How significant is the gain going to be? Any one use this kit before? Where can I get the rest?

I have nver heard of a single alternator only kit... But I am new to this import 4 cylinder stuff.

screw that...i wouldnt want to underdrive my altenator especially since i have a system. I'm gonna get underdrive pulley after i get my rims. But, im gonna just get a crank pulley because i dont want to underdrive my accessories to much, and an aftermarket crank pulley is also alot lighter.

Yeah unfortunatly it says right when you open the kit 'This kit come with the alternator pulley only'. Kind of weird but I'll try it and see what happens

AEM's kit is rather inexpensive, but that is primarily due to it only having one pully. Myself, I will pay the extra 300 for the Unorthidox Racing pullies if I go that route. It has the Alt, Crank, and A/C (??) pully in the kit. Everyone seems to have a little problem with the crank pully idear, mostly due to the hamonic dampner but, it is my understanding that we don't have one of those. I haven't heard of anyone having a 2Z fail because of the UR pully mod.

quote:Bocaj77 has his oil pump go out on his Vibe. GM rebults the bottom section fo the engine and he threw CEL's then. They offered to buy back his GT or give him a new engine. If it was related to the pulley's why would GM try to fix/offer replacement/buy back? Afermarket pulleys are pretty noticable...Not sayin' your wrong, but with GM's level of service...

Distributor/cam shaft like most conventional motors or something different?

From my experience with S.B.C.'s, they do need to be removed/reinstalled with care. Even so with the proper tools ANY harmonic balancer can be removed without damage to the mains or crank! I think the dealer is aking the right questions. He is eliminating possibilities relating to the failure of the motor, just the fact that he asked you about the pullies should not be unexpected! There has been a modification to the original design and it is his responsibilty to examine all possibilties to determine why the part failed! What if he found a scratch in the crank caused by whoever installed/removed the pulley, that had disturbed the front crankseal to the point of failure, now the engine looses oil pressure, cams stop getting oil, lifters, galleys.......... Is the failure the seal manufactures fault, the crank manufacturer, the fellow who istalled the motor at the factory, or a simple mistake with btw a simple fix (a speedy sleeve, anyone with a s.b.c. has probably put one on) anyone can make, even the best trained tech! Its not always someone elses fault, just a view from across the parts counter!

There is no dampener like other engines have (SBC.etc.) The crank pulley, atleast on the 2ZZ, is one solid hunk of metal with nothing else attached.
