Hello all I just thought that I would check in to see what type of sythetic oil you all run, that is if you are running it, and when you switched from regular to sythetic. I am thinking that my first oil change I am going to go ahead and change to sythetic. Let me know all thanks in advance.Mike

Yeah, I went with Mobil 1 5w-30 from my first change on. Changed first around 2k then 5k, trying to go every 3k but this winter I stretched it to 4k. I might try AMSOIL just for a change. But for what I do, I think any good Synthetic is all I need.Dave

I put that oil in the first day I put that engine in and 5 years later, with an oil change at every 5,000km or more never more than 6,500km, not a word of a lie the oil was still golg coloured. A little darker gold but never black. When I traded the car in for my vibe the dealer was so impressed with the care I put into it, they managed to sell it in under an hour. Also use the FRAM- X2 oil filter, it does the same thing as the K&N but has better first time pass through filtration of 97 to 98%.Do this and your engine will outlast your car for sure!MATT! Well, since you showed me yours, silver, confession time: 32,000 km (just under 20,000 miles) <pulls jacket up over head and slinks out of the Forum, to a chorus of "Boo, Shame!"> What can I say, the miles just got away from me... For what it's worth it still wasn't more than clover honey-dark, no smell and needed just a 1/2 liter top up at ~ 20,000 km.BTW, the oil change indicator (which counts engine revolutions and uses multipliers for various degrees of "too cold" or "too hot" oil temps) on my wife's Buick comes on at 10,000 to 12,000 km, even in the winter with all-city driving, and I'm sure GM is pretty conservative, because it's our oil but their engines, at least for the extended warranty period.

It was a premium grade filter (Motomaster Formula 1), but the same one for the whole 20K. Actually, I still have it (was going to take it out wih some old paint, etc. to the toxic wste site) so I might cut it apart and see what shows up...
Seems everyone is voting Castrol which I ran in my Sunfire GT with no probs... my first oil change is coming up soon, time wise it was today lol... but who's counting. My km is under 3000 still... yeah I know, I need to drive the car. But 5w30 Synthetic oil will go in and I trust Fram filters.

I've been using Castrol mostly because it was relatively cheap and available, but I saw some data in an Amsoil brochure which suggested several other well known synthetics (Amsoil being at the top of the heap) were better. That said, a mid range synthetic is presumeable superior to a top grade conventional oil.Speaking of same, I finally got an analysis of my infamous inadvertent 20,000 mi. change interval reported previously in this thread. (Castrol Syntec 5W-30). To my surprise and relief, the report reads: "No corrective action required. Oil is suitable for continued use. Resample at next regular interval." Forget who on the site is a tribologist of sorts and sells Amsoil products, but maybe I can get some help from him re interpreting the specific ppm, TBN, etc. numbers?
