Participating in the GenVibe Contest?

the best program for a t-shirt deisgn with limited colors is adobe illustrator or macromedia freehand it also could be done in flash. Photoshop is made to edit photos not design.

quote:Photoshop is made to edit photos not design.Wow, that's entirely so untrue, I am laughing right now.Photoshop is greatly about design. The program is used extensivly for the layouts of websites (http://www.rpgfan.com), for making extremely awesome images (http://www.deskmod.com and http://www.devientart.com) in addition to just editing photographs.Originaly, yea I guess you can say that the intentions of photoshop being created was to edit photographs, but it has taken off greatly since then. The program is used extensivly in design, and it's a great tool for that.Just ranting ... but that comment just erked me in a bad way.Good luck to those entering the contest :D

if you ask any professional graphic designer they will tell you illustrator or freehand and quark for layout. true photoshop is good at web/photo stuff but if you want resolution which is what is needed for a t-shirt then you need vector not pixels photoshop is working on making vectors a part of it but it still rasterises the images. the reason why photoshop is used for web is more resolution = high image size and on the web bigger pictures = longer load time. as for http://www.deviantart.com yes nice pictures but they are not made for hard copys just as backgrounds and to look at on a computer not to print out larger than letter size paper. if you are going to compare what to use for a t-shirt look at a t-shirt site and tell me that is done in photoshop. http://www.stolenshirts.com

whatever happened to just pencils, paper, markers, and erasers. maybe even a little on creativity? I spent some time in the art room and graphic design courses. i enjoyed every one of them, but there's still something to be said about conjuring up your very own piece of work and not computer generated. i love technology, but... creativity isn't found in a software program. can't this be just a fun t-shirt contest. reminds me of high school, even college. software is a great tool but you still need some talent to back it up. i can't wait to see what everyone will have to send in. it'll be interesting to see what route different people take in their designs.

Entries must be line art images (no photographs) with no more than 4 colors total (front and back). 4 colors? Even your smallest pack of Crayola crayons comes with 8! I've got it narrowed down to 5, but it's gonna look awfully silly without the yellow. I wonder if the background will be white or if other colors will be available...

True true. We chose a 4 color limit to keep the costs of printing down so that we can offer the best prices later on. Regarding too many colors in the existing logo, I'm working on getting some stock artwork available.Mike K.

This color does not count towards the four color limit detailed above. Was that rule there before? If I missed it before, I feel really dumb now. I like it though and I'm going to use it! Are there any limitations to what color t-shirt we can pick? quote:So here's a question. Does the shape of the car count as copyrighted?Oh, good question!!! Nope, that rule wasn't there before, I had thought it was assumed but since I got some questions via email regarding it I decided to write it in.You can use the shape of the car no problem, or a drawing of the car. But someone asked specifically about the Pontiac logo and that is definitely out. Also, I didn't mention, but a Photoshop PSD file is acceptable too (actually this might be my preferred version )Thanks everyone for your interest!Mike K.

I am sinking my teeth into Photoshop as we speak....Being a newbie at the program, I am struggling along! hehehe! I tried a friends version of illustrator, but found it much harder to figure out. So I will stick with Photoshop.Being the one who asked about the Pontiac Logo, It looks as though it may turn out for the better that I do not use it. I am that much closer to narrowing down to 4 colors, now that I do not need red!! Looking forward to seeing everyone else's designs!

i am a graphic designer. 4 color is the term for full color. all colors are made from mixing the four basics (cyan, magenta, black, yellow) if all you can have is 4 colors, thats all you need

I thought mixing red, blue and yellow (or various combinations of) would result in any colour you needed.

screens (tv's, computers, etc.) use red green and blue. it is usually considered a poorer quality color for printing (known as RGB)

If that were the case here, wouldn't they have asked for the image in seperated CMYK channels? I'm thinking that in this case four colors means four colors.

im a rookie to the design scene (about a year and a half on the job). if you send the printing company (i'm at one right now) a computer file of the drawing, they can open it in quark and seperate it when plating. i know nothing about screen printing (the technique used for wierd materials such as a shirt), but it would make sense to me

CMYK can be combined to produce all of the colors and I think that's done often in print work. However, with the silk screening process, each color is put down individually, and colors don't mix as well as they do in print. Four colors mean four colors in this case, for example, orange, grey, black, and blue. Sorry for the confusion. (This is our first time doing this). Please feel free to post or to email me if you have any more questions, thanks!Mike K. mkowdley@genvibe.com

That is a good question. In this case, size doesn't matter... we will be able to scale it as necessary. However, having a good resolution is important to the final product, i would recommend 1600x1200 images.Mike K.genvibe.com

In the rules, it says we vote on only what Genvibe selects as finalists. Is there any way that we could see all the entries at some point? Perhaps after the contest is over? That way all our tireless efforts won't be in vain. I would to see everyone's work, I am sure they are all good.

Hmm...well the poll at the start of this thread says that 14 people "planned" to participate and the rules state that genvibe.com reserves the right to cancel the contest if less than 10 entries are received. I got one in, but I have no idea if 9 other people did too.

Hi all,Sorry for lurking, my day job has been killing me.We've received less than 10 entries total, and it sounds like there are a few more individuals who are interested. Plus, I'm going to be out of town for two weeks starting Thursday. So, we're going to extend the deadline until 31-Aug. That way those of you who want to slip in last minute ideas can do so, and give everyone more to choose from when we do the voting. Thanks for everyone's interest! Also, we will be sure to make every entry available online for viewing. You'll be able to vote on every entry we receive that meets the criteria (many people seem to be having trouble with the color limit).Regarding the color limit, my recommendation for those of you using Photoshop is this: Create a very large image (say 1600x2400) and place both the front and back pictures in the same image. Set the mode to indexed color with 5 colors (4 + background). This way you can be sure that you've met the color requirement. It doesn't look as great on the screen b/c there is no antialiasing, but, screenprinting tends to blend everything a bit anyway.Mike K.
