HHHHHHHEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!! (Recommendations Please?)

Post by latina_qt »

I just can't believe this! I was driving on the freeway and a rock flew up from a diesel and knicked my front windshield. It's a little chip but I don't want it to start cracking especially before it starts getting too hot. Any recommendations on what to do to prevent it from cracking? I don't really need a new windshield and I assume that the windshield for the Vibe would be expensive because of those black dots?

Might want to call your ins. co. My coverage with AAA will have the chip repaired free. If I let it go for a while and it cracks due to freezing, etc. I have to pay a deductible for a new windshield.I had a stone chip repaired in my old Cavalier and you couldn't tell where it was after they "filled" it.

Usually windshield repairs are covered in full by your insurance company. And if it does need to be replaced, usually the place that does it has a coupon to pay for your deductible. At least that's the way it is around here.

I wouldn't claim insurance, as a new windshield probably cost less than $400. I think a claim might raise your rates (if not this time, may be next time you have another claim). windshild repair is pretty good and cheap.

Usually, 1st repair (repair and not replacement) covered under your insurance won't cost anything and it won't raise your insurance. But the 2nd repair will be considered as a claim (same as an accident) and then your insurance will raise. If I were you, pay for the repair (around $30-40) and do nt tell it to your insurance.

I think that sounds best. I did not want to have to go through my insurance. So the cost to fix a chip is around $30 - $40? When a chip is repaired, how do they do it and can you still see anything?

I had the same thing happen. Bummer ain't it? First cover the hole with Scotch tape. I called my insurance guy and he gave me a number to the repair guys. I called them and they asked for my insurance guys name and number and my address. The next day they came with thier 'little red truck' and fixed it. I didn't have to pay a dime. Ask your insurance person how things work with you. You can ask for advise from them without having to worry about getting your rates up. It's only a chip, not a real big deal to them. They fix it by first cleaning it with isoprople alchohal. Then they attache a suction cup with a needle like thingy that goes into the hole. Then they inject a resin into the hole (the same type that they use on your teeth if you chip one) and presurize the area so the resin gets into the little cracks. This is the part that COULD break your windshield. I was hoping it would break on mine so I could get a new one. The resin sets by ultraviolet light so if the repair person is outside they just might use sunlight. After being pressurized for a few minutes they take off the suction cup rig and polish the area smooth. Whoola, what was a ugly chip now only looks like a small piece of dirt.

They fill it with a clear apoxy that bonds with the glass. You can't tell and it will prevent it from cracking. It is worth the money, don't turn that in to your insurance.

just be careful with insurance company.I understand that with home insurance, if you just call your insurance agent about a leak in your house, even if you did not file a claim, your agent is required to enter that into a national database.so if you can get that fixed for cheap, just do it, and don't call your insurance.

I wouldn't put anything in the crack as a 'temp' fix. It just makes it more difficult to get out and more noticable after it's repaired. Just put Scotch tape over it and get it fixed as soon as you can.
