Does anyone else feel that Valentine's Day is just a stupid "hallmark" holiday?(Luckily, my girlfriend feels even more strongly against the "holiday" than I do!)
Yep. But if you simply don't buy a card from any Hallmark source, then you've defeated the evil plot.Instead, I use the day for my own benefit. At my house, the night before V-day the Valentine's FOX sneaks into the house and cleverly hides candies (mostly foil-wrapped chocolate covered peppermint patties) throughout the house. In coffee mugs. In her makeup drawer, behind pictures, in the TV-Guide, in cereal boxes, in coat pockets, in socks, etc. The point is the Fox hides candies where the woman of the house will eventually find them, but so cleverly that some may not be found for up to a year. This year the local flower shop has a package special. for $150, they'll deliver 12 long-stemmed roses in a vase attractively surrounded and composed. Also a large heart box of chocolates, a stuffed animal (usually a teddy bear), a certificate for a one-hour body massage, a bag of rose petals, and something else I don't remember. I ordered that for my wife, who is a very stressed out doctor. Instead of the teddy bear, I saw they had a stuffed FOX so I substituted that. Why bother? My wife will love it. The look on her face will far outweigh any Hallmark consipiracy theories I might have. And my rewards will continue throughout the year as all the hidden candies are discovered. And she'll tell the story of the Valentines Fox to all her friends who will share it with their friends and so on.So avoid hallmark at all cost. But don't skip valentines day. Find a creative way to go-out-of-your-way to express your love to someone. Hell, steal my Valentines Fox idea if you want. See how Cleverly romantic you can really be. I dare you!KSNeptune
Just getting a card is too easy. That's what Hallmark wants you to do!I took the day off of work and I am going to pick up some white star lillies in an arrangement that I am having made up, some awesome chocolates from a nearby candy store that makes them fresh and then taking her lunch at her job. Later on, we are going out to dinner (no kids) to a really nice restaurant followed by a showing of Phantom of The Opera that she has really wanted to see for the past three years. My wife knows about most of this except the flowers and candy. My wife is has also been very stressed out at work lately and I'm hoping this will relieve some of that.By the way, Valentine's day is not really a "Hallmark" holiday as is Sweetest Day. My wife and I do not recognize Sweetest Day as anything. Valentine's day has some history to it. If you are interested, which if you don't celebrate Valentine's day I'm sure you aren't, here are a couple of links to some information about it: http://www.pictureframes.co.uk/pages/sa ... entine.htmhttp://valentines-day.123holiday.net/

YES! My girlfiend of 6 years and I have never once celebrated Valentine's Day. We decided instead to do somehting on Arbor Day (not planting a tree but going out to dinner and maybe a movie and a small gift exchange)

Valentine's Day is ok, it's Sweetest Day IMO is the biggest Hallmark holiday. You have to have one day a year to celebrate love, but creating one in October is crap.
quote:Valentine's day is more for woman.I suggest an holiday for men: Steak and (removed) day. The name say all. Some women like those as well... I mean the giving of, not the receiving. Follow that up with a nice juicy steak. LOL
