Time for some maintenance for the 03 base auto.

Post by joecoolinatl »

Just about to break 109k in the 03 base auto. Only routine stuff I've done since I picked it up in April 08 from the orig owner (at that time it had 36k miles) has been to change the oil and at 90ishK i had the trans fluid flushed. The car seems to be getting a few less mpgs than it did when I first got it, so I think it's time for a big tune up.Here's my list of things to do in the next week or so, let me know if any of this is unnecessary or if I am missing anything:New spark plugs - still haven't settled on a specific one yet tho.pcv valveserp belt (already bought the gatorback one)serp belt tensioner (getting the marbles in a can sound at startup, going to order this one on monday: http://amzn.com/B000IY7RWM )change the oil again as it's almost at 3kclean the k&n filtermight flush the coolant.. don't know if it actually need it tho, going to check this weekend. unrelated to engine tune up things i'm going to do in the next week or so:new pads /maybe new discsnew wipers for front/backreplace cabin air filterand figure out why the back driver side door lock doesn't want to work most of the time when using the remote or lock switch on the front doors.that's the gameplan for the next few weeks. anything else I need to check/replace?

Spark plugs - NGK or Denso Iridium plugs. They're expensive but you won't have to think about them again for another 100K miles.Belt tensioner - Have a jack and a large piece of wood handy before replacing this. You'll have to jack the engine up by the oil pan a very small amount in order to clear a bolt from the tensioner.Oil - 3K miles? That's way too often, look up the 3K mile myth . You can easily go 5K miles on modern conventional oil. 7K or more on synthetic.Coolant - Definitely time for a coolant change. Go to the Toyota dealer and get their long life full strength coolant. Mix it 50/50 with distilled water.Cabin Air Filter - These are amazingly inexpensive on ebay. Be sure to not break the tab off of the door that covers the filter. Very easy to switch out.Good Luck!
