Blown Amp?

Post by bobfell13 »

i have two 12" subs that i spliced to the rear right and left speakers (i know its not a great idea but the stock amp is 200 watts..) but anyway, to balence it out a little bit i also left the balance a little more twards the rear (also a bad idea but im learning). It worked fine for about a month but after i turned it up one day the rear speakers cut out, and the front left speaker made i high pichted buzzing that was variable with the tacometer. The next day the car's battery was stone dead, after some critical thinking, i disconnected the amp, and the car worked fine... just no radio. I took the amp out and theres nothing greesy, burned, or blown up. Is the amp blown, the radio blown, and can i use a two channel 250 watt amp to power the rest of the car? Thanks

Wow! Yeah, thats a bad idea!So you have the premium sound system right? (assuming that by "amp" you dont mean the factory head unit).Sounds like you nuked the amp. I'd suggest getting a 4 channel amp.

and as far as i understood, the only difference between the premium and standard systems is the actual speakers themselves, or is that wrong?

The Monsoon system has a separate amp located under the passenger seat, has the tweeters in the sails, and the sub in the passenger side fo the hatch area. As far as I know, the standard system runs off of the internal amp on the stereo. From what it sounds, you blew the factory amp (whether it be actual amp or head unit). I would actually assume that you would have fried the subs first though with the way it sounds you have it hooked up. When you spliced into the rear speakers, did you run those directly to the subs or to the amp? (I'm assuming when you say amp, you are referring to an actual aftermarket amp correct?

first you need to figure out if you killed the rear channels on the amp, or on the head unit.

Well i have an amp underneath the passenger's seat, after looking up the cerial number im pretty sure its an amp.. but i spliced the subs right off of the wires leading to the rear speakers, no aftermarket amp included. i knew it would be bad for the amp but the speakers only had a drop in power. the other amp i just have laying around, i was thinking of replacing the factory one with that. and how do i check whether the head unit is blown or the factory amp under the seat?
