I have a '03 Vibe GT. My son recently asked me to change the oil in his girlfriend's '10 Matrix. My Vibe has a conventional one-piece spin-on oil filter, but the '10 Matrix uses a disposable paper filter element in a re-usable screw-on plastic filter case. An online search revealed that there should be a removable lock tab that prevents the filter case from loosening. The Matrix didn't have one although I could see the small square hole on the block where the the lock tab is supposed to mount, and the projections on the filter case against which the lock tab presses. Someone who did a previous oil change obviously didn't re-install the lock tab. It seems to me that if the filter case is adequately tightened, the lock tab isn't needed. However, the plastic filter case may be prone to loosening due to its round cross section rubber O-ring that seals around its circumference. This is different than a one-piece spin-on filter that compresses its square cross section O-ring against the mounting surface of the engine. I couldn't find the lock tab in an online parts search. Does anyone know if this part is necessary, or if it's available? Any response would be appreciated.

I've never had the filter housing loosen off. I can see a situation or two where it might come loose but that would only be from gross negligence on the mechanics part!If you really want one, go to the Toyota dealer and have the parts yoyo find it on the computer. It should be available, they make millions of these engines.
