Approaching 30,000 miles... any special maintenance I should do?

Post by vibenvy »

Both our 2009 Vibe GTs have about 300 miles to go before they turn over 30,000. I am wondering if there is anything special I should do other than the usual oil/oil filter change, cabin air filter change, tire rotation, etc.? One thing in particular I was wondering about was the PCV valve. I am going to be ordering a box of 10 Toyota oil filters from TRD Sparks soon and I noticed that they have Toyota PCV valves for $5.50 a piece. I'm wondering if at that price I should just go ahead and order 2 and replace them or is it really not necessary as both Vibes are currently running fine? Any other useful 30,000 mile information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance !

I didn't do anything special at 30000. Im at 87000 now with no problems. Never had the CEL come on or anything either. I even kept the stock tires on through 50000! Though, sometimes it tends to vibrate when its in gear when stopped.

Dealers like to charge a lot for "inspect this and inspect that". They do most of that as part of a LOF. I am at a point in life that I will probably keep cars longer than 30,000 miles so I will pay attention to routine stuff like coolant change, belt change, etc. but do not plan on spending a lot of money on anything until it breaks. Decided not to buy the extended warranty on my 2009 even though it has a lot of stuff to go wrong - abs, traction control etc.

30K is very early for the PCV valve. It's more like a 60K or 90K item.At such a low mileage, there's no need to vary from the recommended maintenance in your manual. Does the engine air filter get changed out at 30K or 60K?

Seafoam, VVTI filter (if the 2.4L has one), clean the MAF, inspect the brakes + clean them + re-lube the caliper pins/bolts, sanitize the HVAC system

It would be a good idea if the manufacturers of cars would put together a list of things to do at different mileage, some kind of schedule for maintenance. And then distribute that information with the cars they sell, perhaps in some sort of manual for owners. I wonder why then never thought of that.j/k, I know you were looking for more than an rtfm response, but as you can see, I had no advice of value

Decided not to buy the extended warranty on my 2009 even though it has a lot of stuff to go wrong - abs, traction control etc.Since I change the oil and rotate the tires myself, I always give everything a once over, probably moreso than the dealer would. I know we will definitely have our Vibes way past 30,000 miles. Case in point our 1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE Sedan, purchased brand new January 1, 1994. It currently has 265,xxx miles on it. We keep cars pretty much forever .Quote, originally posted by sideshowalan »30K is very early for the PCV valve. Does the engine air filter get changed out at 30K or 60K?I figured as much, but like I said, with the PCV valves being so cheap and I need to order a case of oil filters anyway, I figured it wouldn't hurt to double check with my fellow GenVibers.I'm not sure about the air filter, but I just installed brand new AEM Brute Force Dryflow air filters on both Vibes since we have K&N CAIs, so the filters have already been taken care of.Quote, originally posted by ou.grizzly »Seafoam, VVTI filter (if the 2.4L has one), clean the MAF, inspect the brakes + clean them + re-lube the caliper pins/bolts, sanitize the HVAC systemSeafoam already!?! I think I'll avoid that for now since they're both running fine. We've never used Seafoam on any of our vehicles, so I'm a little leery about using it, especially this early on. VVT-i filter? I just cleaned the MAF sensors on both when I installed the new AEM air filters, so that's been done recently. I will definitely check the brakes over and all that, although this will probably wait until I put our 18s back on since I will probably have to touch up the caliper paint anyway. I'm not too worried about the HVAC system since we've had both Vibes since new, they're garaged and I religiously use the air compressor to blow out the cabin air filters and the cabin air filters were already replaced at 15,000 miles and thus will be replaced again at 30,000 with Fram Fresh Breeze cabin air filters. Thanks for the tips! I appreciate it.Quote, originally posted by joatmon »It would be a good idea if the manufacturers of cars would put together a list of things to do at different mileage, some kind of schedule for maintenance. I figured it's better to double check here then not check something and have issues.Quote, originally posted by zaxellord »I think you just about covered it. Oil and oil filter change, replace cabin air filters (replaced the first time at 15,000 miles), tire rotation, check fluids, etc.

I would change the transmission fluid/oil and flush out the brake fluid.I also drain and refill the power steering reservoir once a year. And change the coolant, thermostat and radiator cap every 5 years.
