Overdrive button on shifter(auto) - normally open or closed switch?

Post by tgferg67 »

Hi,Does anyone know if the momentary overdrive button is a normally open or a normally closed switch? The reason I asked is I accidentally ripped the wires out of it when I took off the shifter to replace a bulb in the gear selector. Will it cause a problem if I drive my Vibe with the wires open(like an open switch)? The "overdrive off" light/function is not on - and I have no use for this option so I do not plan on a fix. I am concerned that if the switch is normally closed the wires should wrapped together.

The wiring diagram shows it as a normally open switch, sends a ground to the computer when pressed. This is backed up by the circuit description in the service manualQuote »3. Overdrive Circuit* Overdrive onWhen the engine is turned on from ignition off, the engine control module turns the O/D on. When the O/D main SW ispushed while the O/D is off, a signal is input into TERMINAL ODMS of the engine control module, and the O/D is turnedon by the engine control module. In this case, the engine control module controls the gear shift according to the vehicle’sdriving condition, using the O/D range. At this time, the O/D OFF indicator light is off.* Overdrive offWhen the O/D main SW is pushed while the O/D is on, a signal is input into TERMINAL ODMS of the engine controlmodule, and the O/D is turned off. At this time, the current flows through the O/D OFF indicator light to TERMINAL ODLPof the engine control module. As a result, the O/D OFF indicator light turns on, and the engine control module controls thegear shift according to the vehicle’s driving condition, without using the O/D range. If you never turn OD off, then not having the switch, and leaving the wires unconnected should not be a problem.
