Having a little trouble getting the camshafts out! I took out all of the bolts on the cam caps that hold it down, and I also took out the 3 bigger bolts that hold the larger "bridge" in place that is holding both cam shafts down next to the sprockets. However I cannot seem to get the darn "bridge" itself to come out! I yanked on her pretty good, but to no avail. Any ideas? See image...

With a SMALL hammer TAP it gently side to side. DO NOT HIT IT HARD!! Just very gentle taps. It will move a little bit, tap it on the other side, it will move back, tap it back again, now, you can probably lift it off. I cannot stress enough.... Do NOT hit it!! not a lot of force, just a little shock to jar it loose.Keep in mind, once the cams are off you CANNOT rotate the engine until you get that timing chain off or it will bunch up and break a guide or the tensioner. Also keep in mind, those little round things under each cam lobe are the not only the cam riders but also are adjustment shims. They are all different thicknesses and if you reuse the cam, it is very, no more than very, EXTREMELY important they stay in the exact location they are in. If you remove them, get an old egg carton and label each egg recess for the location of the adjusting shim.Dave
Got the Cams out FINALLY! Dont worry, I didnt hit it too hard, im going to take the timing cover and chain off next, but the wife is dragging me to the mall, so Ill save it for tonight I guess, thanks again for all your help!

Mall eh?? I'm happy to say that my Wife has a perception issue where Malls and large Box Stores make her all shaky and weird. It's a WONDERFUL thing for her to have..... at least from my viewpoint! We haven't been shopping in a Mall for Decades!! And WONDERFUL decades they have been!!!Dave
Well alot has happened since I last spoke to you! Took the Head off, 2 bent valves. After pricing everything out to replace the vavles, new gaskets, new camshaft, and all the little things I was close to $600, and I dont think I even had everything on my list yet! So I went online and found a motor with 60,000 miles for $750 and went a picked it up. Not I either have to install it myself, or hire it out. I had a guy hired to do it, but he was a flake, now I am pondering doing it myself. I can borrow a engine lift from a friend, what do you think? Seems pretty straight forward, lots of bits to take off the old motor and put on the mew one, but basically disconnect everything holding the motor in and pull it out, drop the new one in and reconnect everything back up right? I know its not as easy as I just made it sound either... Also, I am wondering if thr PCM will need to be programmed? Any idea where I might be able to find a run down on how to do it? Ill be calling around to some shops tomorrow and seeing what I can get, but like I said, I am pondering doing it myself...

A complete rebuild done right will run upwards of a couple thousand...BUT...on the other hand, you get a brand new motor. Something to be said for that.Quote » So I went online and found a motor with 60,000 miles for $750 and went a picked it up.Any warranty with it?Quote »Seems pretty straight forward, lots of bits to take off the old motor and put on the mew one, but basically disconnect everything holding the motor in and pull it out, drop the new one in and reconnect everything back up right? If you're gonna hire somebody, hire a kid to do nothing but document the disassembly and bag up the parts so you can reassemble more easily LOADS and LOADS of pictures...and notes...and Dew.Quote »Also, I am wondering if thr PCM will need to be programmed? If you're putting the same thing in that came out, no worries.
I would have only been rebuilding the top half really, unless I pulled the block, and had both machined and all that jazz, my old man rebuilt just the top half on his 92 Toyota Pickup, put it back together, ran awesome for a couple weeks, the bottom half then went out, so its kind of an all or nothing job in my eyes... Rebuild the entire motor, and go find another one... Like you upwards of 2000ish to do the first one there..Warranty inst the greatest, 30 days, so I gotta get that (removed) in and run every check known to man on her before then/Ill be taking TONS of pics, no worry there, lol, I have a bad or some might say good habit of overdoing it when it comes to pictures! All in all your talking me into it, but I will still call around today see what kind of prices I can get, at this point I am running out of car fixing will power! LOL

Also, I want to wash the new engine before I install it, I figured I would screw my old spark plugs into the new engine to block water from getting in there, and I will be using my old wiring harness on the new motor, so I dont think I need to be worried about that either. I noticed a couple other holes in the engine where sensors go and what not, so Ill cover those holes as well. I bought some "Purple Power" engine degreaser to do the job, and I plan on spraying it on and hosing it off in my yard, any other suggestions?

Sucks that it happened, but I think the question is now answered with certainty. At the same time, this only applies to '03-'08 1.8L engines, correct?Didn't Toyota change the heads or something for the '09+ engines?
Quote, originally posted by brandnewrock8 »Right on, thanks again for all the help on this one! Wish me luck on swapping the engine, I am going to do it myself! Ah, drag it on over, My shop is heated and equipped! We'll throw it in after work!!! It's only what? maybe 1000 miles? Just a quick trip after work!Dave
Print out the engine section in that Matrix manual that was linked to previously. IT will be a wonderful resource! If you're feeling wealthy (which I doubt right now) purchase the Helm manuals, they can't be beat.Dave
