Bought a Vibe

Post by tgferg67 »

Hi,I bought a 2003 Vibe. It has alot of miles at 150k. Hopefully the miles won't be an issue as these vehicles seem to be reliable long term. It can't be any worse than my last vehicle, a 1997 Saturn SC1 that I had to re-ring the engine -The good - Every oil change is documented since new.Lots of highway miles - vehicle was bought in a rural area.Paint/body is real nice, was garaged - looks like 75k.-The bad-The catalytic converter was replaced making the exhaust louder than stock. The lifters have a noticable ticking until warmed up. - will check valve lash.

Congrats! That is an EXTREMELY good looking car for the age and miles. If it has good records, you should have many reliable miles left on it.

Welcome to the club! Keep in mind these engines do NOT have hydraulic lifters so there is a physical gap between the lifter lobe and the cam follower. This gap = tapping noises. Yes, there can be too much clearance which will make too much noise. Best you can easily do is pull the valve cover and check them. To replace them requires a selection of followers of various thicknesses, a micrometer and some basic math skills! Here is a photo of the cam and followers I pulled from another current post on here.......Dave

I think you will be ok. The engine and trans are Toyota. You can get parts cheaper at Toyota then GM who pretends the car did not exist. As for the Saturn S-series, that is odd that you had to rering the thing. Most S-Series die due to the trans diff pin shooting out of the trans(happens with both auto and manual) due to the fact GM press fit it in instead of welding it in and one good tire spin in snow or rain and POP!!! it was done. Although it did not take a lot of time to replace the transAlso the thing was know to leak oil out the valve coverBut I digress because the car is in the past. Rest assure that from 2003-2010 the Vibe was the most reliable car GM had in the line up across the whole of GM.Just keep up on the routine stuff and you will be good to go

Welcome to GenVibe! Very nice looking Vibe you have there ! As others have said, 150,000 miles on a Vibe is barely broken in. You're sure to get many more years and miles of service out of it .
