Timing chain tensioner and ticking noise

Post by wallyuwl »

We all know the 1ZZ engine makes a ticking noise. It seems to have gotten worse as the car has gotten more miles on it. Does anyone know if replacing the timing chain tensioner (not the serp belt tensioner) might help with this? Or is changing the VVTi filter the main thing to do to help this? I do plan on changing this filter in a couple weeks.

my 04 has started rattling on cold start accelerations. More like octane pinging but dull like rattling instead of pinging high pitched.Never did it til this winter. clues? I thought VTi filter also because low rpm accelerations have a dull sound now like it's bogged down.

Have you ruled out the serpentine belt tensioner? Good way to diagnose is to run the engine with and without the belt. The noise should go away without the belt if it's the serpentine tensioner. Of course don't run it too long without, the oil and water pumps will not turn.Or do a visual inspection, the oil leaks out of the tensioner piston and leaves a thick reside around it.The timing chain tensioner shouldn't need changing unless it's leaking.
