Best trailer hitch for a 2009 AWD Vibe

Post by NWEric »

I know this topic has been covered before, but I didn't see an exact answer. I hope this doesn't seem like a duplicate topic. I plan to install a hitch on my 2009 Vibe AWD this winter. I have installed a couple of hitches on cars before with no problems. I am a little concerned about the rattling exhaust and hitch problem I've read here with the Vibe. I'll be towing a small trailer that weighs less than 700 lbs with a tongue weight of about 80-90 lbs. It is a Little Guy teardrop camping trailer. My previous hitches have been purchased from etrailer.com. Here is what they show as available for my 09. I've had both Hidden Hitch and Curt hitches on cars with no issues. I don't need the ball mount so I was thinking about going with the Draw Tite model 24812.http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-...e.htmWhich one do you think would be the best for my 2009 AWD? Any good or bad experiences for those of you who have installed one on an 09-10 AWD Vibe.

Can't remember which hitch I bought (I think it was curt).... but it works well! No rattling. It took me longer to route the wire to the battery for the lights then it did to install the hitch... from unboxing to all tools put away...Not AWD but the bolt holes and such are in exactly the same place.

I have the Curt 12228 for one reason - it has the highest weight rating. Barely visible, no rattle, easy installation. You can see in my signature one of the trailers I tow. actual tongue weight 230 poundsactual total loaded weight 2,000 poundsIf you are just buying that trailer be aware that all manufacturers lie about the weight. Plus, you aren't going to be towing an empty trailer so ignore the dry weight and plan on towing the GVWR of the trailer.I would also suggest you consider the fact that the Little Guy is a very spartan trailer. It is great if you like crawling inside on your hands and knees, getting dressed lying on your back, and cooking in the rain. Buddy of mine bought a five wide and was happy with it until he saw my Aliner. Now his 2010 Little Guy will be sold when he finds an Aliner.

That makes sense that you got the Curt. My weight will be significantly less than your Aliner. For me, it isn't much fun to tow heavier trailers up and down the mountains here in the NW with a smaller car. I'm not new to Aliners or Little Guys. I've had my Little Guy since 2007. Actually had an Aliner Alite too and prefer the teardrop. The bed is a lot more comfortable and it is easier to use then having to set up and down like the Aliner. I can also use it as a hauling trailer. I live in Oregon so I know about rain. For rain, I've got a camp table and canopy that I attach to the LG. The Alite is super light and is easy to tow but between the two styles I prefer the teardrop. Fits my lifestyle better. The Little Guy weight is pretty accurate. My tongue weight is more because of the spare tire. I've weighed the LG at a number of truck scales. The Alite was actually less accurate then what the manufacturer lists, but they probably don't include the battery, which was standard on the model. This spring I had to turn aound on a steep forest road that was blocked by snow. Unhooked the LG and manuvered it around. I'll admit the Alite would have been easier but the LG is light enough.I do think a lot of people would find the Aliner a better fit for their lifestyle. I'm amazed at the number of people who get an Aliner or Chalet and then decide they need something bigger. Here's a picture of my previous Alite and my current Little Guy.

Purchased the Draw-Tite bar and the wiring kit as a present to myself for Christmas. I'll probably let my mechanic install the wiring since it will be a lot easier with a lift to route the wire to the battery. Will let you know if there are any problems with the muffler.

Installed the Draw-Tite this weekend. Easy install and no issues with clearance around the muffler.

Is there much difference in the towing capacity between the 03-08 vibes vs the 09-10 that you guys are using? I just bought a 2005 base vibe, and I'm loving it. Need to get a little extra cargo room, and roof racks seem to be out of control expensive. I plan on getting the Curt hitch. Down the road I would love to get a small tent-trailer something like it to go camping with my family.

I see you guys are pulling anywhere from 700-2000+ pounds. I live in Montana, do you think something around 1500lbs would be too much to drive over the passes?
