It's been ten or so years since I last installed a stereo, so I thought I'd get some tips here before breaking my car.I have a 2010 vibe with the basic stereo -- no monsoon/bose/amp, the cheap one. I want to put in a Kenwood HU that has built in bluetooth and a speakerphone. One of the pieces to install is a wired mic. I'd like to run the wire up to the roof of the car, and put the mic head right next to the rear-view mirror. My question is whether I can safely get behind the plastic running up along the windshield, or whether that's a problem since there's an airbag stored in there. Can this be done? If so, how do I go around pulling that plastic off to run the wire?Secondly, I'm looking for the right wiring harness, and I'm a bit confused by the options mentioned on this board. I'm clear that if I want to keep OnStar, I need the GMOS-LAN-01 adapter, but if I don't want to keep OnStar around, which wiring harness is best? Also, is there an alternative to the GMOS-LAN-01, maybe from PAC Audio or something? Just looking for better prices since I assume OnStar availability will increase the resale value some...Thanks in advance for the help!
I had a Kenwood KDCX995 installed by a car stereo shop, and they used a Metra GMOS-Lan-12 for the new harness, they ran the Mic wire up along (inside) the pillar and then along the top of the headliner and then to the top of the rear view mirror. I also upgraded the amp. Can`t really answer your question about how safe it was for the shop to do but it got installed and no airbags went off.
You should be fine running the wire behind the plastic as the Owners Manual says the airbags are actually in the roof section above the windows. The prior owner of my 2010 installed surface mounted tweeters at the top of the plastic pillar covers, right on top of the embossed "airbag" label. They pulled the covers right off and put them back into place. And pics I've seen where the airbags have blown, the pillar plastic still appears to be intact.

Thanks for the help. I need to figure out HOW to get those pillars off, but how hard can it be? Now I'm trying to zero in on the easiest wiring harness. I've seen people recommend the Metra 70-2105 and the 70-2103. There's also the 70-1761, which looks a lot more like the connectors on the current harness, which has two plugs running to it. Which one do I want that won't require me to do any cutting/splicing of the original harness (so I can easily put the original HU back in when I sell the car)? I've searched these forums, but haven't seen any confirmations of no-splicing-necessary installation successes. If it's relevant, I'm installing a Kenwood KDC-BT848U stereo. Thanks!EDIT: Metra says that the 70-2105 is the harness to use. I wouldn't mind some confirmation that it's an easy install, though.
