Transmission died in 09 GT at 50K

Post by yak »

I was driving to work a couple weeks ago and my transmission (auto) started to disengage intermittently. I had it towed to the dealership and they replaced the transmission. Luckily, the car is still in the powertrain warranty, but since I intend to own the car for more than another 50,000 miles, I'm concerned. Has anyone else heard about such an early end to this transmission?

For what it's worth, most so called transmission problems are actually valve body problems. A LOT of money is wasted on transmission overhauls that needed nothing more than a good valve body clean and rebuild or adjustment. You were under warranty, good thing, no worries. I was kinda wishing mine would go out before the warrant expires so I could start part two with a new or rebuilt transmission, but I've only 400 miles left (07 vibe with extended 100,000 mile power train warranty) and it's going strong!! Bummer!!!! Quality!! What's this world coming to?!? I guess I should not have started changing that transmission oil so frequently?Dave

I've got just past 90k kms on mine now. The only complaint I've had is that when it's cold (as in below freezing), and you're having to accelerate moderately (as in going onto the highway), the 2-3 shift seems a bit "slow" happening. Not late - but it's a longer transition than I'd normally expect. It's done this since new with no changes to date. The highway on ramp is right at the end of my street (exactly 13 houses away, on 40 foot lots), so it really gets no time to warm up whatsoever before being asked to get up to speed. In town, I've never noticed it - nor do I when leaving work.I did a bit of research before I bought the car, and that transmission has been around for some time - in a number of different Toyota applications. Although failure certainly isn't impossible, it's also not exactly common for these from anywhere I've looked.I'd just see this as an "unlucky" occurrence - hopefully never to be repeated. I intend on changing out the fluid in mine next spring - as I use it for towing a bit in the summer. So far the fluid still looks and smells new. I too hope to keep the car for several times the 50,000 miles you speak of - so I guess we'll find out just how durable these are.Glad it was done under warranty anyway! I'm sure that wouldn't have been a cheap job otherwise! Just out of curiosity, did the dealer do any re-programming for your transmission at any time? I remember reading about an update to reduce harsh downshifts or something. Mine has been working fine (with the above minor exception) - so I haven't had the dealer "mess" with it. If it ain't broke...John
