1ZZ Engine idling rough after Cosmo Racing CAI install (Please help!)

Post by ORTOX »

I've finally begun following BlueCrush's complete poor man guide.I Just did my first true performance mod after having my car for nearly 3 years.I installed the Cosmo Racing Cold Air Intake as well as the Helix Throttle body spacer. I also cleaned the MAF while I was at it.The car sounds great when I open it up. Ive floored it onto the highway up to about 80 a few times and definitely has more pep than before. However I'm running into an issue. With the stock air box my car idled at about 1000 RPM or so if im remembering correctly. But now with the new mods the car is idling at about 500 - 600 RPMs and is idling rough. Is there anything I need to do that I've overlooked? Obviously I took the battery out while doing the install why can be reset electronically has been. Thanks for your insight guys. Hoping to correct it tomorrow morning if I can find an answer or at least a suggestion.By the way I drive a 2004 base Toyota matrix.

The reason the idle is so much lower now is that the engine is taking in so much more air, that it doesn't need to work as hard at idle with the new intake. Its the same effect as when you're at speed, just minus the speed. Your RPMs are lower at 70mph now than they were with the stock airbox too. The idle is a bit rougher, I think because at that low of an idle it is just naturally rougher. Mine is a bit rougher too, and I idle a little lower at well with my Cosmo CAI.

I wouldn't think a lower idle is a problem but idling roughly is (and sometimes hard to differentiate between the 2). It's hard to say without sitting in the car. Good luck!

With the info given it sounds like a vac. leak or maybe the MAF cleaning did more harm than good.

^Well according to another post he put up on MO he had a CEL already regarding the o2/cat before this mod. The Vac leak or a misplaced hose from the install has been suggested. It's also been suggested he remove the helix and start there. Good luck!

Gonna work on this tomorrow. First thing I'm going to try is cleaning the IAC valve. If that doesn't do the trick i'll try running it without the helix. Like I had mention on MO, I have had a CEL for quite a while, so theoretically I should be able to getting it back to idling like normal since it did idle look normal before the installation with the CEL on.I'm positive at this point that the vacuums are where they should be and there's no leak. Like 100%. So hopefully the cleaning of the IAC valve will do the trick. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

If it's true that you still have a CEL related to an O2 sensor the engine might be running in "open loop" mode, so the air/fuel ratio and idle speed are not being regulated like normal. The system makes a "best guess".Any changes to the intake system will not be compensated for.I feel compelled to come out of lurking and correct some of the mis-information given earlier:The slightly lower restriction of the CAI has the least effect at idle. The closed throttle and IAC valve control how much air the engine gets and they are the dominant restriction at idle. The RPM at 70mph, or whatever, is determined by gear ratios with a manual transmission or an automatic with the torque converter locked. How the intake is configured has nothing to do with it.

I believe the o2 he's talking about is the 2nd one. Which deals with the emissions systems and how well the CAT is working, not engine control. The CAI/SRI in theory will reduce the load on the engine to achieve the desired RPMS/Speed. For example: if you're going 70 mph the engine will run about 2800 rpms. But if your going 70 mph and pulling a trailer the engine speed will still be 2800 rpms but the engine load and fuel consumption will be much higher.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. You're going to laugh though.I checked out this thread:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=45045Turns out two of my hoses were switched... Oh well! Easy fix.I'll see if my CEL comes back in a day or so. I'm probably going to need a new cat soon is what I'm expecting.
