Here is the story my son gave me. Stopped at a red light. Placed 6 spd in neutral, Put in 1 st gear and the vibe didn't move. No grinding, shifter works clean and the shifter on tranny does not have sheared pins. Can not hear shifting taking place with stethoscope. replaced clutch and pressure plate 4 years ago. Any ideas out there? This is my wife's car so she is alittle heated over it.Thanks all
IS the son sure he didn't put it in 3rd? Cause I've let the clutch out all the way in 3rd and the car creeps till it stalls. If the car is not engaging at all, perhaps the clutch got burned completely up (if it's possible) due to bad story-telling and "racing" or the cotter pin popped out of the grommet and the shift cable fell off the tranny - or the cable is physically detached from the throw mechanism. Is it just for 1st gear? If so I have no clue... I mean you should hear something if the cables are attached, right?

When you shift, can you feel it in the normal 8 position shift pattern (1-6, N, R)? The shifter inside the car is just freely gimballed, it is the tranny that forces it into the shift pattern. Can't rememebr which is which, but moving the shifter forward and back and then side to side will cause the shifter arm on the tranny to rotate forward and back, or in and out. (I think forward/back is rotate, side to side is in and out, but not sure) Eliminate the possibility of shifter cable issues by watching the shifter arm on the tranny while someone else works the shifter inside the car. Or disconnect the shift cables from the tranny and move the shifter arm on the tranny. (All with the car not running, obviously)Don't remember anyone reporting an actual 6 speed tranny failure like this here before, so if it is the tranny, it is an uncommon failure.
HmmmTry other gears, is there any attempt to move, try reverse as well. While I'm no expert at the 03's most FWD cars have the shift mechanism cable operated, take a look at the transmission (to the left of the engine if sitting in drivers seat) and look for the linkage arms. Have someone shift the car while you look for movement at the arms.Glance under the car, are the axle shafts still attached to the wheels?? It is so extremely unlikely the clutch would go out at a red light. A cable could have brokenA pin or clip could have fallen offI hate to even suggest it but the younger youth can be very hard on a car when driving alone or with friends. If any "racing" were done and a gear missed on a shift, serious internal damage could indeed happen. You know your son, I don't. If any doubt about his story, contact his best buddies and see what story THEY'VE been told. Their knowledge could be the polar opposite of what you've been led to understand. Just throwing that out there for what it's worth, take no insult please!!Good LuckDave
