heavy gas pedal?

Post by cshaffer750 »

Hi, new owner here, have a 03 with 102K, I have noticed the gas pedal is a littel stiff, causing a small jerk if you are not smooth on the gas off of idle. Trans is auto.Is it common for this car? Or do I need to look a little further into it.

Welcome!I haven't noticed that specifically on my 03, but, uh, er, I tend to take off that way anyway I'd have to pay attention to it next time I go for a ride

Welcome to this site I'd say this is NOT a normal feel/function. My son's 2009 Vibe, which already had the Toyota pedal recall work performed, does this EXACT thing that you are experiencing. We are taking it back to have the pedal replaced. The recall was done while the Vibe was under it's first owner so we have no records of it.

The recall of the 09 does not apply to an 03, correct? I had called a dealer to see if the window recall was done, and it was, but they did not mention anything else

The 04-04 Vibes only had the window bolt recall. But this sounds like normal behavior. My Vibe is like that. It is must worse in a Corolla though.

Since I'll have this car for awhile I want to get comfortable with it

My 2003 Vibe was like that, but I think you'll get used to it rather quickly.

My '03 is very not like that. I wish it was a little tighter.

Me too, the manual trans is a bit harder to get going when your throttle is delayed by a second or two. It's hard enough to get rolling since the motor is so weak and pitiful. Then again, I think it's a lot like driving a go-cart once you get moving so that more than makes up for the initial take off. I'm not drag racing it so it's just fine.

Hmm, I only noticed a jerk if the car almost (but not quite) comes to a complete stop and I push the gas pedal down to accelerate. I may not be noticing what you are noticing if the car is starting from an idle, as I tend to push the pedal down a bit to get the car moving decently (without revving the engine too much, of course).

Same here when i slow down to make the right onto my street, the motor drops down to idle speed & if the press the pedal down too far it will jerk,so i assume it's normal.I just give it a light push, then I go a few hundred feet & a left into my driveway.

Was the recall on the gas pedal only for the 2009? Yes, I notice a distinctive jerk sometimes when I am getting started and sometimes a sort of jump forward which I don't like at all. The ride isn't so great on my 2005 but I like my Vibe!

There was also a recall (maybe it was the same one) about floor mats interferring with the gas pedal.
