Anyone remove thier crank pulley themselves? I have a leaking timing cover crank seal and am in the middle of replacing it but I can't get the crank pulley bolt out, is it reversed threads and what method did you use to hold the crank pulley. The Toyota maintenance manual calls for a special tool. Any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated.
It "should" unbolt the same way the engine spins...The simplest way, you'll need an air powered impact wrench and something (like the proper specialty tool - although a big screwdriver may work) to stop the pulley and engine from turning. It'll be a grade 10 bolt and will require lots of swearing to crack it so give it hell.
