Trans filter....to change or not to change

Post by austinb82 »

I went into the Toyota dealership (they were cheaper than GM) today to get ATF type T-IV fluid to do a fluid change on my 2005 Vibe. When I was talking to them about the filter they told me that while they didn't know about the vibe (I'm assuming same transmission) they don't normally change the filter when they service a Matrix unless it is really dirty and obviously needs it. I was under the impression that you always change the filter so I had already gone ahead and ordered one online because it was cheaper online but I don't think they have shipped it yet so I may be able to cancel my order.I was wondering if I really should change the filter to or not worry about it. It does have 136k miles on it but I think it has had at least a couple transmission flushes before although I don't know if the filter has been changed (I would assume yes because I think GM does change them). It would be nice if I didn't have to change the filter because it would save me money. Also if I don't change it then couldn't I just use a hand pump to get the fluid out of the dipstick rather than having to lift the car and remove the trans pan? I just wanted to get a second opinion before I cancel my order.

The filter is a permanent metal screen from what I have seen here over the years. There is a drain plug on the pan so you don't have to drop it.

I've done mine. It's a piece of cake and you can pick up a replacement filter pretty cheap. I was glad I did mine because I cleaned out all the magnetic sludge at the bottom of the pan while doing it.

P.S. at 136k miles I would definitely do the fluid and filter change. At the very least drain the 4 or 5 quarts out of the transmission pan using the drain bolt and fill that back up...if you're looking to skip doing the filter.
