GM Protection Plan - Major Guard

Post by jake75 »

GM wants to sell me Major Guard - 5 years/100,000 miles. Cost is $1,755 plus tax but they allow you to pay 15% down and the balance over the next 18 months without added interest. Late charges apply. The website says that is for -0- deductible. Option of 84 months and 56,000 miles is $1,645 plus tax. From the website it appears that the time and miles start when you buy the service contract, but you cannot have any more than 12,000 miles to buy the coverage. I wonder if I looked at this in 2 years when I have 10,000 miles if I could add the 84 months. Anyway - it would take a brave person to send GM money for an extended warranty right now. Might as well deal with the Nigerians.

Well... Pontiac name is the thing of the past by this coming monday... the resale value, etc will go down quit a bit....I won't invest so much on the car right now... Unless you get a clearer picture...The bright side is... you know how you see all these Civic or Matrix on the road and that doesn't look so special... if GM cut vibe off the lineup, our 09 vibe will be pretty special as not more are being made

That's cheaper than I paid for the MajorGuard back when I had the Vibe. Probably your low mileage helps, they tend to jack the price up the more you've driven. I was approaching 36k with mine.I've seen the value of a MajorGuard warranty on two cars, if you have a car that needs a lot of attention it's a good bang for your buck. But these days, I think you're right - the Nigerian scam might be a better investment. Who knows if GM's going to even be around in a few years. The gub'ment sez they'll honor the factory warranties in the event of GM's demise, but not sure if that would include a manufacturer's extended warranty.

There also may be a requirement that they were purchased earlier than 12 months ago - I don't know. Obviously they know when I purchased mine. I have read that the GM extended warranty is not exactly bumper-to-bumper like the original 36/36m new car warranty. I had an extended warranty on a 1986 VW Golf - paid off big time. was only $395 for 6 years/72,000 miles. I am not buying anyway. I know that there are dealers selling these GM Plans at less than "retail". Would research that if I am ever tempted to buy.

GMPP on a Vibe????? For anyone considering such a thing, I've got some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell you. Come one; maybe on a Chevy or other "fine GM vehicle", but on a Corolla? Save your money please. Your car does not require an extended warranty.

I would have been forced into bankruptcy if I wouldn't have bought the MajorGard on the Vibe I had... Instead, I think I'm part of the reason GM is in such a gloomy financial state considering the thousands of dollars worth of failed Toyota parts they had to replace. Sometimes they are a waste though! I dumped the Vibe for a Hyundai, bought extended the bumper-to-bumper coverage to 100k just in case. And I've barely even had to use the factory warranty. I blew a grand there.

I paid $1,700 for my $0 deductable GMPP on my Malibu Maxx. I used it about 5 times in 5 years thanks to those wonderful front end suspension parts GM procured from Edsal. Still, I got $700 back when I left the program (er, um...when GM tried to kill me by not puting back the bolt on my front axle).

GM's first-half earnings hit a record $6.3 billion. However, as reported by CEO Dan Akerson, despite the best half the automotive has had in over 20 years, it was not adequate. He announced that cutbacks are arriving. Here is the proof: Despite record first-half profit, GM plans major cuts

GM says they will scale back models - from 30 to only 14 by 2018. Are those the models they hire for auto shows? Article says "As only 31 percent of GM sales in 2010 came from core compact and mid-size cars – compared with more than 70 percent by Ford over the same period – GM will likely cut back production significantly." Thus 69% of sales came from non-core models. If they cut models, then won't sales drop, resulting in higher overhead per unit, plus closed factories? Marketing cuts are also mentioned - well if advertising doesn't move any metal it should be eliminated. But I think John Wanamaker the department store merchant once said, "I know that half my advertising doesn't do any good, problem is I don't know which half". GM said they plan to use fewer engine models. Currently, 16 engine models are in production - target is 10 by 2018. Now that could work.I worked for Borden for 25 years. Their demise is testament to the fact that you can't achieve prosperity via cutbacks.

I think the moment you have to think hard about buying an extended warranty you might be better off with a different car.You are playing the odds and the system is gamed to make you a loser. Just like health or life insurance (which I don't recommend you go without) they do not sell it unless they can make a profit. The difference between your health and your car's health is that you are stuck with you, but the car...not so much.First new car I ever bought was a Mitsubishi - paid $1,000 for an extended warranty that I never used but then kept the car a little too long and had to pay $1700 for front axles and a new clutch (wear and tear items I'm not sure would have been covered anyway). So, you are driving pretty dang good Toyota technology. Playing the odds, you are ahead of the game. If you absolutely have a fear of major automotive catastrophe and you can't afford to switch cars, I'd recommend setting that money aside on your own. It will make a very large down payment on a brand new car that will come with a warranty. w00t!

My only fear is that on the 2009-2010 you have a lot of sophisticated stuff; ABS 4 wheel disk brakes, stability control, traction control etc. in addition to the usual expensive items. The price is the same for a stripped model and one that has all the options. So if you have one that is loaded the cost of the warranty is more reasonable. Warranty Direct used to have a good reputation but recently I see a lot of complaints.
