Cam Chain Tensioner for '03 Vibe GT

Post by jjhendri »

Hi all, hope everyone is still having a great weekend. Good a question for you..I have had a leak from the cam chain tensioner and it has been replaced a couple of times to only revert back to leaking. instead of instaiing the OEM tensioner I was thinking of installing a high performance tensioner if one exist. Can anyone weigh in on this subject?

Updated at 12:29pm ET, ok checked the matrix forum and yes it's a common problem and supposedly an easy fix as noted here from their forum:"On the back of the engine on the passenger side right next to the serpentine belt tensioner shock you will find two studs with 10mm nuts on them holding the chain tensioner in place. First thing is to drain the crank case of oil, so do this when you are changing your oil. Once drained unbolt the old tensioner and discard. With the new tensioner push the hydraulic part in and with the small hook place it on the pin to hold it in place(once you see the tensioner you will know what I'm talking about)place it back on the engine studs and bolt back in place. With a 19mm socket place it on the crank bolt and turn clockwise until you hear the tensioner release the pin holding hydraulic part with a couple of clicks. Finish changing your oil and start her up, checking for oil leaks." Another post states the following: "You don't really need to drain the oil to change it. As far as the noise also check the drive belt tensioner, they have a problem with noise. "So my question is if so easy to change, how to turn crank? I assume out of gear and brake on..I think last time it was replaced it cost me close to $200....JJHHi joatman, thanks for responding. I have not seen anyone else reporting the problem and seems to reoccur every couple of thousand of miles. I'll check the matrix forum to see if anyone there reported it.
