It... Melted

Post by Serj22 »

So at work today I parked my vibe next to a big generator that was not running. I assume they turned it on for god knows what reason and decided to just let the exhaust go all over my car... I can't think of any other reason. Either way, I came back to the back-lot after my shift and found my passenger side tail light... shrank? I don't understand. The heat was intense enough to melt the light and shrink the plastic, but not do anything to the paint or bumper cladding. The bulbs inside along with the rat tails were destroyed as well. The mobile gen was no longer there when I came back. They must have noticed before I did and moved it. Couldn't find out what construction crew brought it in that day, and it wasn't our company's so I couldn't find someone to get mad at... hopefully it will work with spliced generic bulbs and tails till my $64.00 one comes in...

Just in case you want to be as horribly (removed)'d as I am: There's black tar-like sticky stuff on the rear hatch but that is coming off with scrubbing easily. This I can not fix no matter how hard I scrub... I tried... It peeled up some of the red stripe as well but was easily stuck back down...

oh man, that's bad.Agreed on the surprise that the paint wasnt damaged, it must have been very brief, fast, and aimed DIRECTLY at the light. I hope you find someone to yell at.

This is what I'm thinking Camogirl, yes it must have been aimed pretty much right at the light to melt it like that. The paint just had black tarry residue on it but no runs, and the paint didn't crack or start melting off luckily. I have a feeling this car has been repainted before. It has obviously been in a minor front end accident. You can kind of see wrinkles on the top of the front fenders when I first got it before I replaced them.

I would be on my boss' case every day trying to find out what contractor was on the property that day. Are there any surveillance cameras in the lot?

Shame that it happened and the contractor probably should have cordoned off the area. Keep in mind though that the OP saw the generator and chose to park beside it. I think the contractor and OP share the blame.

The problem is that our rp department thinks it unecessary to put cameras anywhere in the lot even though its right next to the warehouse which has a camera watching the roll up doors. I have a designated parking spot and that was it. Equipment is only there if an outside contractor comes in to build a fence or something that the company doesn't necessarily want to keep people on the payroll to do. There's always digital freeway signs, mobile generators or big light trailers parked next to me, then the row of employees goes on from there. Very desirable spot as it's very close to my post. As for the contractor, turned out to be a fencing company which we found out by looking at the truck that left with it on camera. I talked to their supervisor when he came back and he said he was sorry when I told him it was $65.00. He handed me $80 out of pocket and said he was sorry for his employees and that was a stupid thing for them to do. They were working on a large concrete fence behind the lot and decided to leave the generator there and run it rather than move it closer to the work area... I consider the issue resolved though, Very nice guy.

Glad you were one of he lucky ones to have known "who did it" I was a victim TWICE of "hit & run" over the past 30+ years of driving and never caught the idiots responsible for it

I agree, I was getting ready to just start running around punching information out of people. Luckily they fessed up. I too have had multiple "hit and runs" performed on my car, 2 of them were people who literally "hit" with a baseball bat -my rear windshield and front windshield, and then "ran". That was on my Jimmy though...

Wow...lucky. I think a lot of business owners would deny they had flying monkeys for employees and would not have taken any responsibility for said flying monkeys' incompetence.
