Transmission filter

I got a 2004 vibe base model with a auto transmission,and when we got it, it had 130K on it,its now got 160K on it and still runs like a top and the transmission shifts fine,but who knows when the last time it was changed.I've changed transmission filters before,just curious if there is anything special about the vibes transmission filter I should know about? And about how many quarts of transmission fluid do you think i'll loose? Just wondering so I know about how many I need to buy to put back in it.

The filter is just a screen, not a filter. You can replace, you can clean it, you can leave it alone.If memory serves...... 4.3 qts will be needed when you drop the pan. You'll need a new gasket.It will be good to drop the pan, see what "gold" lies in the bottom, gives you a good feel for the overall health of the unit.Dave

New here, looking around.If the screen is just that, designed to catch pieces and chunks, and nothing more, has anyone tried the Wix 58964 inline trans and PS filter kit?http://www.wixfilters.com/filt...58964Its 25 micron, so it should help get some of the particles out of the fluid.I just bought an '04 base model with A/T. It has right at 50K mi on it and I read about the Toyota transmissions needing clean fluid (a parts counter guy at a Toyota dealership confirmed this) and I decided to start a weekly dump and refill, which I've done twice now, and will do another two or three more times. I use Amsoil ATF and it meets Toyota T-IV specs so I have no qualms about using it. I've had very good results with Amsoil products in the past 20 years.Drain and refill is easy for me, I have a two post Challenger lift.By the way, drain via the drain plug, and refill took exactly 3-1/2 qts each time.Charles
