Roof Cargo: boxes, bags and baskets

Post by rgnjc »

I'm looking into some roof accessories for my 2005 Vibe. I've seen a lot of different pictures scattered in various threads, but I was hoping some people can post pictures of their roof cargo on their Vibe and their model/part numbers (if on hand).I recently purchased the oem GM cross-bars (part 12498684). I need to move across country so I'm looking for extra room (plus I can use it for camping/hiking gear). I am particularly interested in the SportRack Aero 1300 and also the ROLA Expandable Cargo Bag. I'm pretty divided and was hoping to see what everybody is using.

I use Thule almost exclusively on my Vibe. The GM cross bars are re-branded Thule bars. I have used Yakima in the past as well. Check out my garage to see some other pics of various setups I've used.

I use Thule's cargo bag and just strap it to the side rails. I also add a ratchet strap to it for added piece of mind. The bags are great because when they're not in use you can fold them up and put them in a storage bag so you can still carry it in the car if for some reason you suddenly need more storage and aren't near home

What model is the bag? I was seriously considering a bag...still am. There are 3 problems I have with bags. They leak, have no security, and may scratch the roof. Do you use a roof basket? How's it hold up against weather?

The bags certainly are not waterproof by any means which is a major downfall on a long trip or on a rainy day. It's water resistant to an extent but in the manual that was included Thule recommends wrapping anything that goes in the bag in plastic to keep it dry if there is potential for rain. They also recommend putting the empty bag on the roof then filling it up to prevent scratching but I still put an old towel under it as well. Security is non existent unless the thief can't find the zipper.I don't have any pics of the bag on the car but the model is the Thule Quest. I got it at Canadian Tire on sale for $59, reg $120something.Really I think it all comes down to how much you're willing to spend, what you need the extra storage for, and how often you're going to use it, as well as how long your intended trips are.

I think I'm going to go to REI tomorrow and pick up the Rocketbox 15s:http://www.rei.com/product/784...f-boxIt's more expensive than I wanted, but it gives me the security and weather-proofability that I will need. I just hope my Vibe with stock cross-bars can fit a 55" long box without hindrance to the hatch or moonroof.
