Blower motor resistor problem

Post by wallyuwl »

Long story short: I've been having blower motors go bad between every six months to every year since we got the car in 2005 (2003 model). I'm thinking it isn't the blower motors, but the voltage that gets sent to it.So today I replaced the blower motor relay, the blower motor resistor, and the blower motor itself (again). After everything was installed, the fan only works on high speed. Is the resistor defective? When you put the rectangle part inside the housing, does it need to "click" into a slot or something in there? There was a bunch of what seemed like yellow-brownish glue on the connector that connects to the resistor. I did my best to get this off the plug before attaching it to the new resistor. Anyone know what this might be, and if it could be the problem?I thought it weird the replacement part was different from the original. The original was all black, and said made in Mexico. The replacement (AC Delco) says made in Japan, and you can see the circuit. It is more gray. When Amazon shipped the part it was not in a box or even plastic bag, just in some bubble wrap inside a box. I wonder if that ruined it?

do you have pics of the connection harness? They do use some glueish type things but it could be corrosion or melting. If the blower only works at that 1 speed then I am 90% sure that its the resister or the wiring, or harness the resistor uses.

No, I didn't take a picture of it. The metal looked fine, no melting. It was all that glue-like gunk. I cleaned it a bit more, and got three of the four speeds working. then I took it out again and tried to clean it more, now only the high speed is working again. So I ordered a new harness and resistor. I'm going to return the old new resistor to Amazon as defective, since I'm not 100% sure it is not defective (though my guess is the harness and only harness is bad).

Is Blower Motor resistor fuse replaceable? My blower stopped working in the medium and low positions. The chilton's book indicates there is an internal fuse in the motor resistor assembly. Is it replaceable? I haven't had time to pull it out and look myself. Thanks

I'm having the exact same problem. I just spent the better part of 2 hours troubleshooting. If you have the medium high speed working, the fuse is fine. The problem appears to be the resistor between the med high and medium low speeds ( jumpered the connections at the plug to the rotary switch to verify). Can someone tell me where the actual resistor is located?

The blower resistor is where the floor and the firewall connect on the passenger side. There is a wire harness you'll need to disconnect from it. From the factory they use some sort of goo (for heat dissipation) that gets hard over time, so you'll have to probably use a flat head screw driver to get this harness connection off of the resistor. I actually had to replace the harness (and the wires that connect to it, which go to another harness) because all that goo got stuck in it and made it not work any more. It was like $38 at Advance Auto Parts. The blower resistor was about $40. Go to Bobistheoilguy.com and look in the forums and there are discount codes you can use if you order online and pick up in store (or get shipped). Anyway, continuing, on the non-blower side it isn't a direct fit so I had to solder it to the other wires (I cut it post-coupler on that side so after I soldered the wires together it was still "plug and play"). This will all make more sense once you actually get in there and look at things.

So was the harness the problem? I am having the issue with the switch problem - it only works on high. (And now, to add to the aggravation, my AC has gone out.) Anyway, we have replaced the switch, resistor, and relay and nothing helped. I'd like to talk with you on this if possible. Thank you!

If hitting the motor makes it work, the motor brushes are likely worn (assuming it has brushes). Either way, sounds like you need a motor.

I actually took my car to have it fixed. The connector (harness) was indeed the problem with the blower only working on high. The AC needed a new clutch.
