Rear glass shattered

Post by nerka »

Anyone have their glass shatter for no reason? The day before the grass was being cut by the maintenance guy. I went to the store a few hours later and it was fine. The next morning I noticed this At first I thought it was from the ride em mower because there was no gravel guard on it. But seeing that its tempered glass it would have shattered right away from a rock being thrown from the mower. Very strange and $300 later....

OH NO! I'm sorry to see that! My mom once had a car that she parked in a shade (underground structure) parking lot at work and she went back to it at the end of the day and the back window was completely shattered but still together, like a completed jigsaw puzzle. The security guy said probably from heat/humidity built up inside the car (?)

That happened to me in a 1987 Chevy S-10 Blazer. I pulled into the garage, got out, closed the door, and heard this tingling sound back there as the glass shattered and fell. The Chevy was so old I was concerned AAA would total it, but the cost ($500) barely scraped in and they paid.

Happened to me too, overnight. From the amount of glass scattered on the drive, it looks like it just exploded outward.I called the police to report it, just in case it was kids with a BB or pellet gun, but there was no projectile of any (pellet, BB, brick, rock) found inside the car. The evidence technician hadn't heard of one 'exploding' before, but I mentioned that I'd read about it on GenVibe.

Happened to my father years ago on his Dodge Caravan. He was driving on the highway to work. The rear glass just shattered. It was probably weak and his hit a bump...

This is just one more example of why it's good to have tinted windows. The tint will keep the glass sort of held together and thus, will keep it from shattering all over .

Never hurts to have a spare.

Temperature may or not be involved. When I had this problem with the backglass on my 1987 Chevy S-10 Blazer, the temperature was not extreme and it was parked in my garage. I suspect it was a combination of the age of the vehicle and a possible defect with the glass. As for tinted windows...it was nothing for trouble with me with a pickup I had. First I got a ticket, and second, it started getting all bubbly and looking bad. It was installed by professionals, too.

Insurance (SCAM?) Update:First, thank-you, GenVibe family for once again having reliable information that can save all of us time and money. So first, I called my insurance company claims service (because they're a small Indiana insurer and don't truly run a 24x7 worldwide in-house claims department, but use a 3rd party outside of weekday business hours) who transferred my call to 'Guardian Glass Service'. 'Guardian' was not open at 8 this morning, so the claims service left a callback message with 'Guardian'.When 'Guardian' returned my call 2.5 hours later, they said my comprehensive deductible was $500 (yeah, I've saved several thousand in premiums over the 20 years I've been with that insurer, more than enough to pay for this claim), and that just the back glass, before installation, would cost $662. I quoted the 'roughly' $300 figure mentioned in this thread for NEW glass. They gave me a case number, and my choice among nearby glass installers who would "call Monday morning after 9 a.m. to arrange for an installation appointment."Then, I looked online and got an instant quote and a confirmed appointment with Safelite.com (who I've used before for a windshield) with a lifetime warranty for less than $330 installed, tomorrow at my home.Since everything under $500 is coming out of my pocket anyway, why should I even bother going through my insurance company for the 'privilege' of paying $170 more?? Of course, I cancelled with 'Guardian' immediately.Tomorrow, I'm going to let the Claims V.P. (who I know personally) at my insurance company and my local insurance agent know about this scam. The only logical explanation for the cost difference I can come up with is that Guardian is giving the referring claims service and/or my insurer a percentage kickback on the total bill.

Interesting! Now, what year are all of your vibes? Is there a correlation in year? Maybe they just made weak glass?

I have an 04. When Safelite did my replacement they said there was some rust on the hinges and said they thought that could have contributed to the problem. It was a small amount of rust but still.

Had the hatch glass shatter out of my '09 Vibe last November, right around the time we had the cold snap. Thought that was the cause, but the first winter I had the car it survived Northern AB's -35c weather so I doubt Chilliwack's -10c weather was the culprit. Ended up getting my glass at Riteway as all the glass places wanted over $1000 to replace. Never heard of Tom's, maybe I'll have to visit them for a windshield quote. Cheapest I can find for that is $254 @ Speedy in Seattle (Locally was almost triple)

Where did you get the -10C in Chilliwack? Not from me. It was a 30+C when it happened. Also we have government insurance here. Its called ICBC. Apple Auto glass quoted $400 and like I said before, ICBC wanted them to look for a used window also. It would have taken forever to find a used one as opposed to a new one. Toms has been around for 25 years and doesnt rip folks off like it seems all your glass shops do.

Another update - post repair/reinstallation.So the glass installer that 'Guardian' referred me to called me early Monday morning to arrange for the install while Safelite was here doing the repair. Guardian hadn't bothered to tell them I had cancelled! And here's where it gets really interesting...1. The referred shop wouldn't be able to get to me for a week.2. Guardian only authorized them for $440, not the $600+ Guardian quoted me on the phone for the glass-only. Didn't really matter though, because my deductible was still $500. So apparently Guardian was going to charge the insurance company $160 beyond my deductible AND take $60 of my payment too!3. Then they quoted me the same $330 if I was doing it without insurance, but it would still take a week for them to get it done. Then I talked to my local insurance agent. Since he's an independent, he represents a number of insurers, and he, too asked rhetorically, 'Why should it cost MORE for a identical repair if you have insurance than if you don't?' He's going to take it up with my insurance company's VP of claims. The only downside to the repair is that the installation tech somehow managed to not properly reinstall the nut that holds the lift tab in place on the rear wiper shaft. The lift tab is there, just not secured in place, so lifting the back glass still works, but the tab moves around. Probably one of those parts that was frozen after 9 years and he had to strip the threads to get it off. But I'm going to call Safelite so they can fix it correctly.

Tom Thompson Auto Glass is on West Yale. I do know that the glass places charge ICBC a very hefty price for insurance work. Was that $1000 quote for non insurarance work? Thats crazy high. Just came from Tom Thompsons Glass, VibeBear. He just reaffirmed what I said. My cost for a new rear window for an 07' Vibe is just over $300, no insurance involved. I asked him about a windshield quote and it was under $300. I'd like to know who is quoting you $1000???

Well this happened to me last saturday and i would need the help of fellow vibe owners to determine why.Friday : my radio breaks and i bring my car to best buy to replace it under warranty. everything seems to be done well radio plays fine. Saturday morning 9 am (0c outside)i leave for work and turn of defrost. 2 min after i smell burnt but thought that is it from a car in front. 2 min later smoke comes out of my dashboard in the radio, defrost module area. I stop the car, turn off everything, make sure theres no fire and head to best buy because i thought they messed up something somewhere. 2 min later while driving my rear glass explodes like in a movie(just to give you an idea, small pieces of glass entered my bumper) . My tint prevented the glass from reaching me. Went back to the garage, didnt find anything fishy or snapped wires and such, took it even to another garage, they couldnt find anything burnt around the radio, raido works fine and defrost seems to work fine also, ill confirm when my new window is installed. We ( me, best buy, my garagist, lebeau windshields) are puzzled and cant see what caused it. obviously i must put heavy doubt on the radio installation but cant see what or where. The aftermath and if anybody has any ideas of what if could be it is appreciated, i wouldnt want this to happen while someone is sitting in the back. As you can see it exploded so hard, that not even a single glass piece was left. Also i forgot to mention my ECM was replcaded by toyota under a recall a couple of months ago.

Just want to ask about my thought of a possibility as to why the glass is shattering. ...... My opinion is based on what is happening to my windshield wipers against the glass. My bad wiper is causing the glass to vibrate as it is being draged across the glass even with a lot of rain to keep it wet. I fear that it is going to shatter my front windshield. And, my rear wiper is doing the same thing to its glass. If no one wants to believe that, then perhaps the glass is being shattered by the very stiff ride the Vibe gives.
