The scary thing is the number of people who do NOT know better. My own aunt feel prey to one of these scams and wired off about $20K to Nigeria. To say the least, I was shocked and appalled that she had done so. It's well known in my family, what I do. And I was always very close to my aunt. Now, she's broke, divorced and has totally shunned the family. We have no idea if she's even still alive. Most people laugh these phishing schemes off, but the fact is, they wouldn't exist if they didn't work to some extent. The sad part is that the phishers make millions while those of us who try to stop them or try to educate end-users make a few hundred for our efforts. Still, I'd do it for free if I could find a way to totally stop these things from ruining more lives.
Over the past several years I have more than once suggested to my Congressman Tiberi, who is on Ways & Means, that there should be a federal tax on internet service to fund efforts to help keep the internet safe for users. I think most of us would gladly pay a 5% tax added to our isp fees IF the money were dedicated to that task. I recently paid $150 just to get my computer back up after a trojan infection that got by my software and hardware firewall and anti-virus/anti-malware software. Add to that my time and loss of working hours. Overall I think the return on this 5% investment would be very positive. I am weary of my fellow Republicans who misread the attitude of the people in regard to taxes. I look at taxes like any other expenditure. I don't mind spending money, I just don't like throwing it away. Here in Columbus, OH we recently spent about $40 mil (estimated cost at first was about half that) to replace a bridge across the downtown river. There are three bridges within less than a mile. This new bridge carries very little traffic - the best you can say is that it looks nice. Our federal, state, county and city taxes at work.
