Funky idle AND P420 (cat malfunction), Radio not working= no remote

Post by camkos »

So i havea couple concerns. First I have the typical cold engine high idel (about 2500, sometimes searching), but the car has also been spitting out P420 codes when i turn the cruise off from highway speeds. There doesnt seem to be an exaughst leak. The car has 183000 kms on it. Second question. My stock radio had been powering on/off when i hit a bump. Now it is stuck off and the "alarm" light doesnt blink, nor does my keychain remote function. Is there a fuse inside the radio that finally blew? the underdash fuse is fine. If i buy an aftermarket deck will my remote still work? This is all starting to make me miss my 92 suzuki swift lol

well i got the radio fixxed, and also the remote locks work again. checked the wiring diagram and turns out there are two fuses for it. one under the hood and one under the dash. the one under the hood blew also causing the dome light to not work. Still not sure about the P420 code tho. Im kinda thinking that my intake manifold gasket is worn out, thus causing the eingine to pump more fuel thru, and in turn unburnt fuel may be leaving the engine and tripping the downstream sensor. Does that sound likely to anybody?

I don't show anything for P420. If you are getting P0420 that could be caused by a cracked intake manifold gasket.

P0420 is a catalyst failure code. I would check out the precat on the exhaust manifold. Be careful if that precat disintegrates it can get sucked into the engine and will score the f*** out of the cylinder walls.

Forgot to add it might just be a bad o2 sensor. Check the post cat o2 as well.

P0420 results from the comparing the first O2 sensor reading to the second O2 sensor reading, and seeing if there is the right difference. If they are the same, the computer infers that the cat is not convertiing. Some say an intake gasket leak can cause the cat to go bad. The first time I ran into P0420 (at about 100K miles/160K km) I tried repacing O2 sensors because they were cheaper, but it didn't help, ended up replacing the cat. Now I'm at over double that mileage and throwing P0420's again. I recently replaced my intake gasket, and keep restting my P0420, waiting to see if the cat will heal or if it is shot.Quote, originally posted by joshuaeb09 »P0420 is a catalyst failure code. Where are posts indicating that this has ever happened to a Vibe?

Google Toyota PreCat failure. Its quite common on the 1zzge but I've heard of it happening on other toyota engines. Its because of the Valve overlap to help control emissions. It allows for some exhaust gasses to get sucked back in and when the precat goes and those chunks get sucked in your done.
