Mysterious engine noises

Post by lannvouivre »

So, recently my dad and I changed the oil and automatic transaxle fluid in my 2006 Vibe. I checked the levels again to the engine oil (which was at the proper level) and the transaxle fluid (which was between the two "hot" divots 30 minutes after I'd been driving), following the instructions in the manual.I don't really know if that first paragraph is really relevant or not, as I don't know much about cars besides sometimes things happen and they cost a lot to repair. Anyway, sometimes I hear a low whining noise emanating from my engine at various speeds (although not while I'm idling). It sounds kind of hydraulic in nature--similar to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOR2cTu_QZ4 but at a higher pitch and a lower volume...uh, you might want to turn your volume down for that video. The pitch remains constant and then stops after a couple of seconds, and the volume tapers off in a similar manner to the noise in the video that I linked to, but the amount of time between the occurrences of the sound is much greater. It's really inconsistent on intervals, but only occurs when the car is moving.I think it's been making this noise for about a week, and I can feel the vibration from it through the gas pedal. My dad is stumped, but said it's probably nothing serious, and that if I took it in to have investigated, it would probably cost $300 just for that...Other information that might be useful:-The temperature for this entire week has been over 100 degrees F-The car has about 69k miles on it-I haven't tried driving with the AC off...I guess I should do that tomorrow morning

The noise has greatly decreased in volume and frequency. Earlier today it was loud for a second after I went over a bump roughly, but I haven't heard it since.I'm not too worried about it now, but if anybody knows anything about it, go ahead and say something. It was a really bizarre sound that had me pretty stressed out whenever I heard it.

Dad's pretty sure we got the "T-IV Automatic Transmission Fluid," but we threw the bottle away. We're going to Wal*Mart to double-check ASAP.

Does the sound change with vehicle speed, RPMs, shifting? If you have the right fluid it may be unrelated.Possibly a wheel bearing, next time it shows up, try swerving left and right to shift the wegiht around. If it's louder one way and quieter the other, it's a bearing.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol...28224 That's the transmission fluid we used and it says it's recommended for T-IV, so I think it should be fine.Quote, originally posted by sideshowalan »Possibly a wheel bearing, next time it shows up, try swerving left and right to shift the weight around. If it's louder one way and quieter the other, it's a bearing.I'll do that if it happens again (and I'm not surrounded by other motorists), but it's been really quiet.
