Does the Tensioner Belt/Pulley Need to be Replaced?

Post by spuyear »

Two separate mechanics suggested I replace the serpentine belt on my 2006 Vibe with 106K miles on it. I figured it was about time anyway. However, one of the mechanics also said that I needed to replace the tensioner belt or pulley. This seems like overkill to me but I am no mechanic (no even close). Do I need to replace the tensioner belt or pulley just because I need to replace the serpentine belt? Thanks!Shawn

short answer no.long answer, depends on if you are seeing the belt "bounce" up and down while the car is running or hearing a "thumping" from the engine bay while you are driving. Or if the piston is leaking. Then yes it should be replaced

Thanks. I am having no issues with the Vibe. I think I'll just replace the serpentine belt.Shawn
