Howdy, all.Just purchased a used 10 Vibe (2.4L) with 36100 miles on it. First time I put gas in it, it would only accept a slow trickle before it would click off. I thought - probably this station's pump (out in PoDunK). This has however continued to occur. Takes about 10 minutes of very slow trickling to fill this thing up. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? Thanks, all. Nice place ya got here.
I have a 2007 and it did the same only when it was brand new. A few months later I noticed it just went away. It's been OK ever since...sorry no real solution from me. Except for maybe it'll just go away. haha
I was just about to post a very similar question about an '06. I've tried searching and have seen where people check vent lines, etc. but the '06 system is super sealed and I'm not sure where to check next.There is no CEL and the car runs fine otherwise. I just bought it used with 83K miles on it and it had this problem immediately. I'm most confident there is a failure somewhere in the vent system, but I'm not sure how to pinpoint it.My big question is if there aren't and CEL's going off, is it safe to assume fuel hasn't leaked into my canister and everything is fine there other than some failed vent valve?
i've had that problem once or twice with my '10. i put the blame on the pump at the station, and have not had any further problems. but it definitely freaked me out when it happened.
If it is doing that every time , at every gas station, there is probably some damage done to the cannister & valve. This is a FACT ! Trying your best to fill the tank to the very top can do damage to your car. You see this in many Toyotas. Expensive damage. Let it fill , the nozzle clicks off, & go.
Yeah, that's what I've read Esteban. Unfortunately, I've just gotten the car and had no idea if the previous owner had this bad habit or not. I'll see if it gets any better or if it was just that one pump. I also read where someone attributed it to hot summer days and it is June here in Texas, so....When this happens to Toyotas where people are overfilling and destroying their canisters, are there generally trouble codes that come up? There are no CELs and I watched them do a full OBD state inspection and everything came up peachy. I'm just trying to decide whether I should bother pulling the whole canister to give it a test.
I find it's all in nozzle position and nozzle design. Fill to click, add $3, pay!I find it almost impossible to fill at a California gas pump with that stupid boot on the nozzle!
I have a 2010 & it has never done that. I have never seen a code show up because of it. I have seen many Toyotas , & other cars damaged by doing this . Gas gets into everything & damages it. NOT CHEAP to replace these parts, either , unless you can do it yourself with junkyard parts. A friend recently had the exact same problem on his Camry. He admitted to filling the tank to the top of the tube !! He got all the parts [ underneath near filler neck ] from a junkyard & replaced his. Cost = $40 . You could pour gas out of his old parts. NO, letting the parts dry won't help because they are probably already damaged. Since you just got it,,, there should be a warranty of some kind ..
That's just the problem, though. Not knowing what the previous owner did, the car is kind of impossible to fill properly. I have to fill it slowly enough that I'm probably overriding any check valve and in even more danger of destroying the canister if it isn't already done for.Oh and no warranty. It was an as is type of deal. Car is pretty perfect apart from this.
The parts that are probably damaged, are emission parts & covered under warranty. BUT, dealers know very well why these parts get damaged & may refuse to replace them. You could take it to any GM dealer & try, though. If they try to charge you, expect a quote of $450 , up. Til you get it fixed,, sometimes you can fill it faster by turned the nozzle 180° . [ upside down ]
I once had a car with this very issue, putting gas in was nigh unto impossible! Pulled out the fuel filler neck and pulled out a red mechanics rag!!! At one point the gas cap must have gone AWOL and the owner shoved a rag in the hole to keep the gas from sloshing out, it worked it's way inside and that was the end of the easy fill. Took it out, reassembled and all was well.Dave
Might have a better shot at warranty coverage as emission part if you bought this from a GM dealer. It was obviously that way when you bought it from them - even if sold "as is" I think they may have some responsibility. They probably made a 2 grand markup on the deal - they could afford to fix this.

Since it is a used car with unknown history it may have been wrecked. There could be damage to the tank or filler tube causing the problem. It is going to take some detective work on your part to figure out the problem.

Their price is pretty fair & it is not hard to replace. There is a valve there that sometimes needs replacing to,,, but almost always it is the cannister that is at fault. It may eventually set a code , but when defective, refilling is so frustrating , who wants to wait for that. Emission control is regulating differently && longer than the typical dealers warranty , so do see a dealer & try to get them to help, first. You may have a 50 / 50 chance of saving some serious money. If they don't help, look for a used junk car , that uses the same part. Look for this part ,, rather than the exact car & year, since other cars may use the same system. P.S. The other post with the rag stuck in the hose,,,, that produced the exame same problem by blocking the venting.
