P0170 P0171 MAF related problem....CEL solved

Post by lexicon »

About a year ago, I got the dreaded P0170 p0171 CEL.I had cleaned my MAF previously with isopropyl alcohol and swab, later brake cleaner and later electrical contact cleaner.... I cant tell you what caused the problem, but, I suspect it was me......Here is what I tried.....And the return of the CEL was intermittent.-cleaned MAF multiple times over the last year-looked for vacuum leaks-FINALLY replaced the intake manifold gasket ( we dont get really cold weather, however multiple threads indicated it was an issue.)-did the dealer recall in which the dealer changed my PCMStill no luck....I finally ordered a new MAF....its been 300 miles and no CEL has come up , so, the issue appears repaired. (ebay $56)My suspicion is that the old motto applies "if it aint broke, dont fix it"The issue did not start until I decided to CLEAN my MAF as a maintenance procedure....I suspect I either damaged or slightly changed the MAF sensor when I cleaned it..... either with the swab ( I really was careful) and alcohol, or over cleaning with brake fluid......So, my recommendation is.... only use the recommended electrical contact cleaner, be very gentle and treat it carefully.the car has over 100,000 miles on it....it definitely idles more smoothly ( i didn't realize it was idling poorly, figured it was normal, since it wasn't really that noticeable. I will later edit this post to include the list that was helpful in my troubleshooting.

Chances are good you screwed up your MAF by how you cleaned it. You aren't supposed to touch it with anything or use harsh solvents. You did both. A can of MAF sensor cleaner is $7 at most auto parts stores.
