Prep and paint for textured trim?

Post by JonJon »

First post, by the way. Loving all the great info on the site.So about the trim... Not sure what to call it exactly... but the two tone business around the bottom edge of the car. I just landed an '06 Salsa with the grey textured panel trim. Well, except for the front lower bumper cover. It's clearly black. Not a huge deal because this is a car with a rebuilt title and the price is right. Frame checks out after a good once over and it's obvious the damage was purely cosmetic when it happened and the frame has not been hacked of rewelded or anything.Anyhow, I'm considering pulling them all and painting them matte black. Has anyone done this before? I'm mostly worried about the textured finish being difficult to prep and flaking off not too long down the road. Would it be possible to pull these pieces and have someone sand blast them for a reasonable fee and I can just primer and paint from there? Just not sure how to approach this.

Ans while we're at it, how do you remove the panels at the bottom of each door? I've found tutorials and info on every other piece of trim except the ones at the bottom of the door. Do you have to access it from the inside with the door panel off, or are clips exposed when you remove the lower skirts on each side?

I have not done so yet but painting my grey cladding a satin black like the mirrors and other black trim is on my to do list. I am greatly interested in seeing how you accomplish this and the look afterward. I am sure you read in your searches that monotone cars have the same cladding as two tone, only painted, and when I asked our body guy he seemed to think it was a matter of cleaning, a light sand, and primer and paint.Whatever you end up doing, good luck and welcome to genvibe!

The cladding and bumpers on the vibe I -should- be closing on tomorrow had a textured finish. Like a molded textured finish. If you search for bumper covers on ebay, you'll see listings for both.If they were just flat surfaces, I'd have no issues sanding and painting them, especially a matte or satin color. But it's the textured bit I don't feel comfortable with. I'm seriously considering painting it all with the spray on bed liner.I think I'll just get some color match paint for the grey, touch up the rear bumper and paint the front for now. But I may have to revisit this and go for the bed liner idea. I just kind of hate the idea of gooping up my panels with it and not being able to go back on the idea. It seems to me like it would be thicker than regular paint.Any other ideas?
