I left work a little early today because it's Friday and my birthday is on Monday, and I took a detour because I didn't feel like toll roads today. On the way home I passed the old Dodge dealership and figured I'd drop in on my buddy in sales. He was doing pretty good, and asked me if I wanted to kill some time. I said sure and he said follow me. We walked for a good while and as we rounded the corner there it stood... the 2003 Viper SRT 10.Ron started spewing out numbers and statistics and I just ran my fingers over the hood to make sure I wasn't dreaming. "Amazing isn't it..." he said. I tried to act unimpressed. "It's okay... if your into that kinda stuff." I replied. "Wanna drive it..." he asked. I resounded with an enthusiastic yes and he tossed me the keys. This was an amazing car to behold. Bright red with all the accents a true sports car is known for... with a few surprises. The front not only included the standard Dodge T grill, but also the standard Viper hood scoop. The 2003, as I was told, brings back the side exhaust, one of the last things I noticed on the outside before I climbed in.As I lowered myself into the car it felt like i was putting on a pair of pants. I felt like I was back in the Mini Cooper again, but the guages where were they are supposed to be. In fact there is a plethera of them. More than I need, but now I know where that extra money is going. As I looked at the dash I noticed a red button with the word "start" written on it. So I did what all of you would do.... I pushed it. Ladies and Gentlemen, I cannot explain in words what the sound of this car coming to life sounds like, but I can hear my accountant say... you can't afford this. As I sat in the car grinning Ron lowered the Convertible top, and said... let's go.This is where I should tell all of you, I haven't driven a standard in a LONG time. So let's just say I got to experience the start button one more time. After finally finding first gear, and calming Ron's nerves, we were off.A few stop lights, and plenty of looks, we found a freeway on ramp, and I got to put the 8.3 Liter V10 to the test. As I took it through the gears with ease, thanks to the sport shift, we were at 90 faster than you can blink... and I still had another gear to go. But the best part of the story is our trip back to the dealership. Now if you're out there come forward... you gave it a great shot. A few blocks from home I pulled in next to a Lava Vibe GT. He looked over at me, probably cause I was waving... and he reved his engine. So of course I reved mine, he looked at the light and back at me... and when that light turned green he was gone. Ron looked at me and said... "I know what your, thinking... go ahead." So I floored it, and just blew the doors off that little guy... He may need to read up on the specs of the old Vibe GT, cause the Viper's got that whole 500 Horsepower 525 Torque thing going on.So final thoughts. I think I like this test driving thing. The Viper is amazing, and rightfully so, I expect amazing at $83, 795 Base (Do the math that's 4.19 Vibes = 720 Horsepower). It feels great, has a wide stance, great grip, thunderous engine, and enough power to keep you and your passengers glued to the seats while accellerating. All I can say is to the lone Lava GT in O-town tonight... I could hear those balls of yours clanging the whole way home.So Mr. Hansen says, check me out next time when I take another car around the block... until next time keep the Hammer Down and Look Out for Smokey...
I can't believe you got to test drive an SRT-10. They're VERY nice rides! I'm going to wait for the Coupe version.
