How to disable a doorbell?

Post by 808 Vibes »

Went to take a nap this afternoon, tossing and turning trying to get comfortable, as usual, plus baby's martial arts workouts are from 12:30 to 6am. I finally fell asleep only to have someone ringing my doorbell around 8, making the dog go ballistic, since he's in ULTRA-Protector Mode right now, and was at his post-never far from me-sleeping on the floor next to the bed. My lights were all off, you'd think that would be a hint that either nobody was home or awake. But nooooooooooooo. Does the thing have a plug I can disconnect, or ? Thank you, Exhausted and Karate-chopped

Try the circuit breaker.Or take the cover off the bell and disconnect one of the wires.Or you can always get this floor mat.....

Several ways to disconnect a door bell, but that will probably not solve the problem. If the bell doesn't work they are just as liable to knock on the door or a window.I suggest when necessary, place a temporary sign posted on the door itself stating, Please do not disturb the VERY pregnant person that resides here. That should be enough to scare off anybody in their right mind... which does not necessarily include Krishna's or Jehovah's, who may ignore the sign and ring/knock anyway.

"no solicitors" sign? no trespassing?friends/family don't just show up unannounced so they aren't the problem.

Thanks, everybody! I think I will take the cover off when I change the smoke detector batteries SOON (don't want to be even bigger and climbing up the ladder when I do) my mom's house has a crude doorbell that is a little rubber mallet part that hits a metal part and I was able to stuff paper between the mallet and that part, hopefully it's something similar

Soooo, finally got around to climbing up, removing the cover and doing a temporary fix. Outside property inspection is inevitable very soon, and I had a handwritten card taped over the doorbell, which I didn't want to get fined for, so removed it. I stuffed some cotton balls between the metal bar and the hammers or whatever they're called. BUT... I tested it. Although the doorbell is ordinarily REALLY loud, the cotton muffles MOST of the sound, the dog still got P.O.'d. What else could I do? I reeeeeally didn't want to mess with the wires. Before:After:

Caretaker has two suggestions:1. "Smithers: release the hounds"2. The Clapper - zapper: when you clap your hands, all the lights in your house go off. When someone rings your doorbell when the lights are off, they get a 2,000 volt thanks for coming!!

Could have also just removed the two wires, though I know you didn't want to do wiring. It's low voltage so no worries or you could have removed the two white tops of the plungers. They then wouldn't be long enough to strike the bell bar.

It's a 2-tone bell and it appears that both of them hit the top bar and the bottom bar. So that's why I put cotton balls all over. I feared getting zapped if I tried anything else. Thanx

I would assume that a two or three dollar inline switch on the red trans line would be a quick and easy way to do it. Pigtail, cap and electric tape unhooked red trans line to one side of switch, other side line of switch to the trans screw. Any electricians on the forum to verify?Figuring where to route wires and mount switch is another matter.

My problem of the last ten years or so was just the opposite of yours. It's supposed to be two-tone, but I was getting only one. Seeing your post gave me the gumption to see If I could do something about it. Turns out the second plunger was barely moving. A couple squirts of graphite did the trick.
