Oil leak...

So I just got this car about 2-3 weeks ago and just got new plugs, a pcv valve, etc and when going to work on it I noticed an oil leak when I took the plastic cover off.I'm new to this engine, but reading around i believe this is the Oil Control Valve in the photos. From the crappy cell phone photos, does it appear that the leak originated from this or does it look like its coming from someplace else? Is there an area on the front passenger side of the engine that is prone to leaking? It isn't like oil is 'flowing' from the leak, but its still troublesome. It appears that there is a gasket this side of the engine..could that be the issue?Again, I apologize for the photos...taken with a cellphone because I couldn't get my digi cam to fit! Just to give you perspective, I was standing in front of the passenger headlight when taking these pictures.

Looks like synthetic oil seep... I have something similar on the VVT bolts. If it's not leaking where you can see a drip and the bolt's not loose I probably wouldn't worry about it. If it starts to drip or leave a puddle, then start worrying!

My concern is that its not running synthetic oil yet...this is with the conventional that was in it when I bought it...I plan to run Catrol Edge (synthetic) shortly...so that is what I'm a bit concerned...

Same thought,, that's NOT a leak. That is oil vapor / minor seepage residue.I'd clean it all with a degreaser and keep an eye on it. If it ain't broke, don't go fixing it!!Once clean and you watch it, you'll see where it is coming from if it is really a leak, then you can fix that spot.I'd have no fear of synthetics. The old stories of it getting by seals and such is an old problem when the technology was new. If you want to run synthetic, go ahead.That being said, the engine is older and treated in an unknown manner. You just might consider running conventional oils of the weight specified on the oil cap in this engine. What real benefit will you see from running synthetics at this stage in the engines life? I only run synthetics in new cars I get to ward off wear, the older ones that wander into my stable get the old tried and true conventional oils. That's me though, you do as you wish.Dave

Thanks guys, I've been planning to clean the engine bay once it is (finally) warm here in WI so I'll be sure to clean that area and keep an eye on it.
