I had an 05 vibe stolen a couple weeks ago, now I'm trying to find a car to replace it, and of course the Vibe is still my top pick. The problem is there aren't many being sold around here, at least not at a price I can afford.Today a 2003 AWD vibe popped up on Craigslist for a decent price, but after my experience with Subaru I'm scared of AWD. ****ty gas mileage and Tranny problems. Any advice? What key areas would you look at before spending the money on a mechanic check out? Thanks in advance!
"***ty gas mileage":24/30...was the most fuel efficient AWD vehicle sold for most of the 00's. Vs. FWD, you're giving up 6mpg on both. "Tranny problems": Um, no. I haven't seen any evidence of abnormal A/T problems here or elsewhere (C/R's, Edmonds, MatrixOwners, etc.). That said, check for an adam's apple. As far as what to look for, it's getting harder & harder to identify what might be a potential problem. Owner records/receipts are always a big plus. Obviously check oil, ATF, coolant & air filter (if a $15 item is dirty, they probably don't care about maintenance in general). Check tire wear...and definitely make sure that the car has directional tires (and that that arrows on the tires are pointing the right way); stupid, I know...but you'd be surprised. Wouldn't hurt to get underneath and look for leaks or evidence of recent cleaning of the bottom end of the engine and transmission pan. Of course, everything might look great and you still might get a lemon; every time I sell a car, I change the oil/filter/ATF, steam clean the engine, wax & detail...it doesn't necessarily mean I took care of the car throughout my ownership.Good luck!Cougar VibeBTW: How many miles?
Turns out the rear diff was going out. SO I am passing. I am looking at 8-9000 for a vibe. 05-07 depending on miles. anyone in the NW see something I would be glad to check it out. I might be willing fly somewhere within a 10 hour drive to buy a GOOD car, but we'll see what pops up.Having a car get stolen SUCKS!
When the seller opts not to disclose the # of miles you know it's not low mileage that's for sure.If I were looking for a used Vibe I think I'd also expand the search to include the Matrix as well. Check out CarMax - though their slogan might as well be" used cars at nearly new car prices".

Sometimes Cars.com will have listings, but you're probably going to have to expand your search area to include the west coast north and south, to neighboring states to your east. Those inland and southern areas will probably yield Vibes less likely to suffer from road salt damage. Vibes are a keeper type of car as you know, but keep looking! You should be able to find one in time. Good luck on your search. How did your Vibe get stolen? Hope the perps get their dues!
