recruiting new vibers

Post by bassplayaz06 »

so my sister has been married for a year, and drives a 1999 pontiac firebird with almost 195,000 miles. i suggested that she go get a 2010 vibe with around 50,000 miles for around 10 grand. her only comment was she doesn't like the shiny gauges with the circles. that's why she wants a 2011 camaro. it has square gauges. lol.

Don't you think a new 2011 Camero is a more suitable replacement for a 1999 Firebird than a 4 dr 2010 Vibe? Apparently she's not ready for something more practical. I think what she is really saying is that the gauges may be round but the car is too square.

Funny, the gages on the vibe are the only thing I hate about it, during my brief test drive of the one we are buying Thursday. Round and small. Takes a careful foot/eye to drive 55 without cruise. But I bet I will get used to it? And see with that cluster in the photo above quick glance and you know in almost a instant if you are going 55 or 57. And yes I try to drive the speed limit, just to enjoy watching cars with GT logos flip me off at the first chance they get after they pass me on just a simple two lane highway. Then watching them get pulled over 5 miles ahead of me is priceless, ok so that has happed a whole one time in my life. But still. LOL, please don't kick me off the board for being (removed) about speed limits.

Last year we test drove about ten cars before purchasing the Vibe. My first impression of the Vibe was that the drivers compartment/gauges looked really tacky. I still think they do but I've gotten accustomed to them. After looking at all the other brands we tested we choose to live with the Vibe gauges. However a new Camaro wasn't on our radar. It is an entirely different class of car.

the engine and transmission are gonna go out soon. it's always leaking fluid from somewhere and the rear bumper needs to be replaced. some drunk idiot in a mustang smashed it and her room mate's car all in one move. just scraped the back bumpers though. the transmission shift's real hard and the engine is low on power. has the 3.8 V6.

A friend of mine said i looked like I was driving a spaceship when she first saw my gauge cluster. Ha.I just don't like how those deep circles collect dust when the windows are down, and the plastic lenses scuff if you look at them wrong.

I'd take a new Camaro over the Vibe too! Big issue for me was the price difference. Couldn't come up with the extra 10k

After what I have been through in my lifetime of cars, sometimes just having one that starts and runs with some degree of reliability is enough. My 1977 Buick Estate Wagon was probably the biggest disappointment. It went through ignition modules and starters like there was no tomorrow. It was 26 years (2003) before I bought another GM car - and that was really a Sheep (Toyota) in wolf's (GM) clothing.

Visibility out of the Camaro is terrible due to the massive A,B and C pillars, and small windows/windshield. Lane changes in heavy traffic are no fun at all. Also, since the windshield is so short, the rearview mirror (in combination with the A pillar) makes it difficult to see when making right turns. So far there's no curb rash on the wheels, but it's probably just a matter of time. The guages in my Vibe are much easier to see. The Camaro's digital speedo/DIC can wash out when the sun hits it just right, which is fairly often. When I put the steering wheel where it is comfortable for me, I can't see the turn signal indicators, so I have to crane my neck to see them. That's not so much of a problem for my girlfriend (it's her car), being 5'2" compared to me at 6'. The Monsoon sound system that came in the Vibe sounds better than the Boston Acoustics that came in the Camaro. Neither is stock in that area anymore, though. Having said all that, the Camaro is still a fun car to drive as a weekend cruiser or on a roadtrip, in spite of the shortcomings. Even with the V6, it has plenty of power, and will leave my Vibe in the dust.
