What is this wing thing called?

My very first wagon, a '79 Caprice Classic Estate, had this wing/deflector on the back that appeared to do a pretty decent job of keeping the back clean. Don't see anything similar on newer vehicles.

I don't think there is an exact name to it, but I see school buses with them all the time. There isn't some special name, they're just a different type of spoiler. I'd assume it was just a fad, because that would work great on the Vibe. The 1999 4Runner had one, I know for sure.

it's just a rear wind deflector. I believe Ventshade makes a universal fit one, but would imagine it looks pretty ugly, though functional. I had hoped the puppy dog eared top spoiler for the Vibe would help with it, but it didn't do anything.

My 2010 GT is the worst car yet for attracting grime on the rear window and hatch. Possibly due to spoiler?

If I recall it deflected air in to the back window, when open, so that exhaust fumes wouldn't be sucked in. We had a older buick older version of that car. 1966 Buick Special, no power steering, no power brakes, No power anything, no A/C and for entertainment an am radio.

my 92 rodeo had one that was integrated into the roof at the back. it was supposed to deflect wind onto the windshield and keep the dust off of it...

I haven't had that wagon in 20 years. Just wondering why newer cars don't come with something like it. Perhaps gas mileage. The back of the 2010GT gets very grimy very quick, our 2011 Outback is nowhere as bad.

Wagons were really bad about sucking exhaust in that back window. The "air deflector" was intended to move air down the back of the car to prevent the fumes. They still didn't work very well.

We sometimes design these on dumptrucks to keep the back clear of snow and stuff. It has a name I just cant think of it right now.

We used to sell that as an accessory and add them to the "new" Cherokees and Wagoneers when I worked at Jeep. IIRC, they were simply called a wind deflector. The idea being it would redirect the cleaner air coming across the roof down the backlight to help keep it clean by replacing the negative pressure area and ensuing turbulance w/a positive one.We sold a lot of them, so I guess they did something?
