Finally a sub-on a budget !

Post by torker »

I finally got a sub in the Shadow Vibe. I found a 10" Kicker in a box on Craigslist for $35 then I picked up an 800 w Lanzar at a pawn shop for $50 and finally a 680 w wiring kit for $ 25 at Walmart. A few hours later in a friends heated shop and we got Bass now. I terminated everything first and sat in the driver seat with the lamp in my lap so I could play with the adj. I am really glad I did. If I run the lowpass up or run the bassboost or gain too high it goes in protection mode. I did it a few times I found I have to run in highpass and only about 1/4 up on the gain which is ok because I like nice clean bass. No boomy-rattle the sheetmetal bass for me. Maybe I am getting old The pawn also had an Eclipse-slightly less power for the same money and I have heard great things about them but it was filthy. I still need door speakers but now the sub seems to really help. I can turn down the bass on the HU and let the sub take care of it. I really want to look for a M&T rear kick panel and mount a sub in the factory location and I may do that sometime. For now I can still fit $300 worth of groceries so it works. Loving this mod. What do you all think? Anything I should have done different? Dave [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

Having one heck of a time getting another pic up. When I tried to put up another it replaced the first one So, I decided I would reply to my own post to put up another. I hope the mods are ok with this. Btw The plexi on my volume is to cut the glare at night. The HU won't dim enough for me.

Nice, congrats..!!Couple of things for you... I'm sure you could find a window tint shop that would give you a scrap of tint.. cut a small rectangle.. BOOM... dimmer radio, no funky plexi hobb knobb.. lol.. Does the CD player have internal crossovers?? (what's the model #? I can look it up) If so, use them.. I'm not understanding your highpass/lowpass thing here.. the sub should be on LP... and the rest of the car HP (if the deck has crossovers)we could also go over some gain setting stuff to get the most out of it, if you liked..you're new, welcome to GV..!!

It is a cheapy 119 dollar Kenwood KDC-MP242 The display was getting dim on the factory hu and I wanted the MP3 input. No crossover that I see in the book. I did not have the car running so that may have been causing a problem. If it wasn't 20 degrees right now I would play with it a little more. Before I could only get to about 20 on the volume before it started distorting. Now I can get to 30 and it is pretty clean. I could probably turn the gain down some more and try the Lowpass again but I am really happy with the sound like it is. I really only wanted a factory sub type sound. Not any booming . I still need door speakers but I have gained a ton of bass and more volume. As far as the volume knob. It is just the ring around the volume that is too bright. And it is actually easier to manage than the small knob. A couple fingers on the edge is all it takes. It is just velcro holding it on but holds really well.

Yea I am loving it Sometime I'd like to get something newer with some remote adj. up front. I have been doing a lot of reading over at Soundomain but there is a lot I still don't understand yet. For now my 107 dollars got me just what the doctor ordered.
