2004 p0133 AFTER O2 sensor replaced please help

2004 fwd 70,000. cel came on before x-mas. car was professionally (paid $) diagnosed and they said it was the 1st O2 sensor (sensor 1 bank 1). I replaced the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold with a Bosh, x-mas eve. drove the car from OH to Col and back about 2,500 mi. the cel came back on yesterday i had it scanned today and it is saying the exact same thing "p0133 slow response bla bla bank 1 sensor 1..." the Bosch has a 1 year warranty but i can't believe it would go bad this fast. please helpthanks

Not likely it has gone bad however it can't be ruled out. First I'd run wiring to make sure you done have any shorting or damage to them. Are you running any FI (Turbo/SuperCharger)? There has been a theory about O2 sensors failing because of them. I don't believe you fall under the ECU recall. Goodluck!

this is a stock vibe no mods. any suggestions about "running the wires" is this a visual inspection or am i hooking a multimeter?

Sorry but my Internet Connection at home sucks and couldn't reply to you earlier. Anyway Yes check out both ways. You don't have a GT do you? Someone has some wiring diagrams for the 1zz engine (check sublimewind's sig). Test the wiring with a meter. Since the O2 is under warranty I'd go ahead and get another one and install it (or make them test it). Is it possible you could be burning/leaking oil and foul the O2?

Cory, you may have a leaking intake manifold gasket assy. They are simply an o-ring assy. Pre-2006 have had a high failure rate. And PO133 tends to pop up when cold as the o-ring gasket shrinks. The Professional is wrong this time. There was a bulletin for GM on this. It's a very simple 1 hour job to replace. OR you have a less likely exhaust leak.

Interesting. I'm having the same problem on mine. 2004 stock. The problem came on one day when the temp was really cold out. Mechanic replaced the 02 sensor..and the CEL light went away only to return 2 weeks later. I wonder if it is in the o-ring gasket as Jasonvibe mentioned. Cory..did you ever find out what's wrong?

Mine's also a 2004 base. It's at the dealer today for TSB #09-06-04-008A: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)Illuminated, DTC P0133 Set (Reprogram PowertrainControl Module (PCM))However, they'll telling me that that bulletin has been superseded by #09-06-04-008B. The tech tells me there's a internal GM doc that's pre-TSB that says these models need the intake manifold gasket(s) replaced to fix this problem.I'll post what I find out.BJ

Dealer says the TSB doesn't apply (only 2005 FWD Manual Trans and 2004-2006 AWD Auto Trans - mine's a 2004 FWD Manual).Dealer also told me of a GM doc (ID 2047561) with a #PIP4036A - that basically says if there are no engine performance concerns, then replace the intake manifold gasket. They quoted me $230 parts and labor.May do it myself, or with them...but will report back when it's done.Weather's warming up, so it might be next winter before I know for sure, but it IS noisy when cold.BJ

This symptom usually sets a code P0171, system lean Bank1. I know all shops should look for tsb's but bad O2's cause this code also. If this happened where I work we would probably offer a steep discount on the Intake Gasket job to make it right but this may not have been all that malicious or stupid for that matter. I have had other issues with Toyota's giving a unique code for a problem every other manufacturer identifies with a different code. P0128 is typically a coolant thermostat code but you will get burned on this code on a 1998 Toyota Sienna, since that code means an Air/Fuel ratio sensor has a bad heater or heater circuit either on bank1 or bank2 . When I see P0171 I always look at freeze frame data for engine temperature to see if it may be a leaking Intake gasket/o-ring like all the Ford Explorers had from 1997-2001, Ford made the O-rings more oval to seal up those cold running Vacuum leaks, I did a few Windstars for the same problem too, it's noteworthy these all have plastic plenums as so do the Matrixes/Vibes and Corollas . ---Frank

hey I am a proud owner of a 2004 ponatic vibe with the moons and tunes package. I just bought it in august. As soon as the weather started getting really cold my cel came on. I got it checked and it was 02 sensor bank 1. I replaced it a week and a half later the check engine light came back on for the same thing replaced it agian. And now a month later my checkc engine light came back on again for yet again the 02 sensor. Auto Zone ordered another one for me and getting fixed again but what else could be wrong with my vibe. Its my baby its the nicest thing ive ever owned in my life and I work very hard for it and just want to fix the problem before more serious problems occur. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong

I agree with the bad intake manifold gasket. Toyota released an updated one thats more durable. Whether you do it yourself or take it to a shop, be sure to use the updated toyota part.It's easy to tell the old gastket from new because the new gasket is red now. Costs less than $15 at the dealership.You may want to consider DIY if you're at all mechanically inclined, not difficult but can take an hour or two.
