Light sensor switch

Post by KITT222 »

Hello Vibers! I want to disable my automatic headlights by disconnecting the light sensor in the dashboard. I know I can just unplug the sensor, but I want to make a switch, so the light sensor can be 'on or off'. Off for me, but if my dad were to drive it, I could turn them back on. I just want to know the single wire I could cut to disable the sensor, and attach the switch to use it again. Keeping it simple. Thanks!

The easiest way is to just cut the wire at the DRL module, I think its #12(?) and put a switch in there. There are plenty of threads on here about how-to do it. It is tight down there though, so be forewarned.Go to my "garage" thread (link in sig) to see the harness/switch I made up, cause I basically wanted the same thing as you. The pictures are near the bottom of page #1.Have you also considered doing the independent fog light mod? It really helps a lot when your running w/the high beams on.

The appeal of doing only AHL delete, and switch is more an attempt to make my dad happy about the whole thing. He REALLY doesn't want to mess with the electronics of it, and I don't mind the DRLs as much as I do the AHLs. The AHLS went on in direct sunlight before noon today. That didn't sit right with me. Although I may also be contributing to the issue, because I have my high schools parking permit right over the sensor. Either way, though, I don't want them. I don't want to be desensitized from the driving. For DRLs, they don't bother me as much now as they used to, but if I wanted to, I'd delete them later. That fog+high beams... I'm interested. I tried my high beams for the first time, really, today, and they suck. No way around it, they are just terrible, so yes, I would like to know that. I'll search around for that real quick.

When I had the Vibe, I wired a switch in with the ambient light sensor to cut off the ALC. I wish I could remember which one I used though! I did it by process of trial-and-error: Pulled the gauge trim ring and you can see the wiring harness for the sensor (3 green/some other color stripe wires, white connector clips immediately above the gauges.) I disconnected the two plugs and jumpered the three pins, leaving one disconnected for testing purposes. When I finally figured out which one it was, I cut that wire (on the side of the pigtail going to the sensor) and spliced in a switch installed in the switch blank area. Then, just put the switch in the off position before starting or releasing the parking brake and you only had the DRL's. If the ALC had already kicked in, it didn't allow you to shut off the lights unless the brightness was sufficient to automatically turn them off. At that point you could then flip the switch to keep them off.

Ive removed the sensor, and I have the harness. I've tried to figure out which end connect to which to make the headlights turn on, but I haven't figured that out. So, that is where I need help. Which wire should I put the switch on?I might get a better picture tomorrow too. What I am planning on doing is an AHL switch, a DRL switch, and a fog lights switch. Turn off AHLs, still have DRLs, and have full control over fog lights. Turn off DRLs, and you don't have AHLs, but fogs can be either way. Someone else driving the car? Turn fogs back to the way they should be, turn on DRLs, turn on AHLs. In other news, I have officially had my Vibe for 1000 brilliant miles!
