Loud noise when driving pass 60km/hr (~40mph) - '03 Vibe
We bought probably one of the first batch Vibes that came on the market, in early Spring 2002 (it was a 2003 automatic). We love it and so far, other than chipped paint off the front bumper and the A/C leak; we didn't have much problems. The car has 220K km on it (about 150K miles) now.A month or so ago we started hearing very loud noises coming from the engine part . This noise only comes on when we take the car upto around 60km/hr+ speed; which means in city driving there's no noise, but highway driving is extremely noisy. This happened after we found out that we forgot to put engine oil in the car and it was almost dried. We subsequently added oil back and kept the oil at the right level. However, the noise did not go away. The noise sounds like muffler broken/fell off type of rumbling but coming from the front of the car, where the engine is located.We took the car to the mechanic and he told us that we have a cracked engine / transmission bearing. That's the reason for this loud rumbling sound. He said that we have to change the transmission; or we just leave it until the car dies which can be any moment since a 2003 Vibe with such high mileage isn't worth more than the price of changing the transmission.Since having this noise problem we are still driving the car. There's no problem with accelerating, no heating up of the engine, no engine light coming on, everything still run the same, except the loud noise when driving on the highway. We are wondering if anyone has had similar problem (the loud noise), and whether anyone knows what could be causing this noise. We don't know much about cars, but we love and want to keep our Vibe for as long as we can. Help!

Does the noise happen above a certain rpm? does it make the same noise in 3 or 2?

Yes, it happens regardless of which gear we are in. I though maybe the gear got stuck in 2 or 3 and we tried driving at the different gear, but the noise level stays the same. We can see the rpm meter goes up when we are in a different gear though so we know the gear shift is working.
